The Neck Curve...

A normal/healthy neck curve is shaped like a "C".

That curve should be about 42 degrees.

Do things to maintain and improve that curve.

"I Just Can't Get Comfortable With My Neck Pillow...Help"

Sometimes going from no curve in the neck to using a pillow that puts a curve in, isn't the most comfortable thing. This is why we often recommend someone starts off gradually. A big change too quickly can make you sore. We want to make that change for you gradual.

It's really like anything else that you haven't done, or haven't done in a long time. Your body and/or muscles aren't used to it. So when we say start gradually, it may just mean yo use it for 20 minutes and go back to your old pillow.

It really depends on someone's neck. If they have no curve at all or maybe a reversed curve (kyphotic neck) it can take longer to make the change. Since you really won't know what your neck curve looks like without an x-ray, start gradual either way.

If you get used to it right away - great! However, if you are reading this you may just have to gradually get used to your pillow.

"Why Am I Sore After I Slept On My New Pillow?"

The reason is because your body needs to get used to it. Many people have lost some of their neck curve. So when you first sleep or lay on something that puts more curve in the neck it can make you sore.

As a matter of fact, the loss of ones neck curve is the most common spinal misalignment there is. Sometimes it can be seen in ones posture too. If you see forward head posture there's a good chance some of that cervical lordosis is lost.

So, "what should be done to avoid the soreness"?

What one must do, is to gradually work that curve in there. Gradually do some neck traction at a short period of time and for a low intensity. Do a few reps of neck exercises. The same with anything else, do it little-by-little.

How Can I Use A Neck Roll For Help?

A good neck roll is something we all need. You can lay on it anytime to work that curve in the neck, you can sleep on it, you can use it for comfort, you can use it at the gym, and more... It's especially good when waiting for that neck pillow to arrive in the mail. A good neck pillow has a built in neck roll, but if you have another roll, or you want to use a towel, you can. "Get Working On That Neck Curve"

Many individuals have lost the curve in their neck that they need. Technically you need 40-60 degrees. This can be seen and measured on a lateral cervical x-ray. However, you can see a whole lot from a lateral view of ones posture. Either way it may be a good idea to sleep on a neck pillow. You may even want to do some neck traction with the posture pump. Those that use a neck pillow, along with doing neck exercises, and true neck traction, seem to have the best results.

Why Didn’t my Doctor tell me my Neck has no Curve

At this point I’ve seen numerous patients who had neck s-rays requested by their MD. They were sent to the radiology center or the imaging floor of the hospital.

What typically takes place is the films are taken and a radiologist reads them. The doctor then looks at his report and makes his diagnosis. At the hospital they are mainly looking for major, life-threatening findings: fractures, cancer, etc … When spinal shifts are spotted they are often neglected or sometimes overlooked.

More and more nowadays radiologists and MD’s have learned the importance and significance of spinal misalignments. However, I still find that many patients are not being made aware of these findings and told everything looks ok.

Spinal misalignments are significant! Especially a complete loss of your neck curvature or a reversal of the curvature. However, chiropractor, physical therapist, or physiatrist can often even detect possible alignment issues through posture analysis, ranges of motion, or palpation.

Keep in mind that your MD doesn’t actually read your x-rays, he’s got many other things to do, and doesn’t have the time. The radiologist reads the x-rays and will send the report to your MD. So there often can be some subjectivity when the pictures are read as well as the report. Also, when I say your MD I’m referring to your primary care doctor. Radiologists are MD’s too, and if your doctor is a specialist; orthopedist, neurologist, or D.C. for example, they often read the images themselves as well.

In conclusion, take charge of your own health. Spinal shifts are not normal and you shouldn’t be told everything’s fine when there are significant abnormalities. An inadequate or abnormal neck curve is a big one, and shouldn’t be discounted anyway.

Happy New Year Everyone! Wishing everyone a Happy, Prosperous and Healthy 2010 ! - NJ
