Do you Only Sleep on your Side?

Over the years we have found that a number of individuals solely sleep on their side. They may move or roll over, but they only go side to side. Besides that, if someone is suffering with back pain, hip pain, shoulder discomfort or any other condition similar, they may solely seep on the side opposite of the pain.

People that fall into this category may want to choose the side-sleeper pillow. The side-sleeper pillow is specifically designed to keep your posture good when you are on your side.

"I admit that I purchased my side sleeper pillow (MedSPL106) with an expectation of zero results. I have tried everything else that you could buy in all the retail stores, and nothing worked, including some expensive pillows. Then I found arc4life and this amazing pillow, and it has COMPLETELY eliminated the chronic neck pain that I have suffered from, for years! I'm so happy that you cannot imagine the relief I feel. The increase in my daily productivity as a result of this purchase will pay for this item a thousand times over the years. Thank you arc4life. You're my hero for life. How Can I Improve My Sleep Posture?

The biggest variables when you sleep are your pillow, your mattress, and your sleep position.

In regards to your pillow, a good neck pillow is best because a neck pillow will help to improve your neck posture. It will also keep your spine in good position when on your back or side. Your pillow should not be too high or too low, too hard or too soft, or it will force you to put your spine in an awkward position.

Your mattress also plays an important role. I mostly find that people often sleep on something too soft. This allows your body to sink into it, which in turn changes your spinal alignment. It often can become more difficult to move as well. It is normal to move around when sleeping and, in fact, it’s a good thing.
Nowadays, alot of mattress companies give you a garauntee, so if you don't end up loving your mattress you can have it sent back.  Arc4life's pillows all have a 30 day garauntee as well.

Lastly, your sleep position is important as well. Side or back sleeping is best. Sleeping on your stomach is detrimental because you have to crank your head to either side just to breathe. But make sure you don't use too much or too many pillows or it will push your head forward while on your back or it will push it into your shoulder when on your side.  Doing this each night is how poor sleep posture leads to bad spinal alignment and nerve pressure.

Sleeping Comfortably when You Have Neck and Lower Back Pain

If you are experiencing neck and lower back pain you know that it can be very difficult to get into a comfortable position for sleeping. In fact, you may find yourself tossing and turning for most of the night. You may even have tried sleeping on different mattresses, chairs, using different pillows and positions. So what can you do finally get some deep sound sleep?

The Cervical Linear Traction Neck Pillow By Arc4life for Relief of Neck PainUsing a cervical support neck pillow (one with an indentation in the middle) can make a big difference. For example, Arc4life’s cervical traction neck pillow is a good cervical support pillow especially for neck pain relief. This neck pillow has two sides to it- a support side and a traction side. The traction side with give your head a gentle lift while sleeping and keep your head and neck in the proper position for sleeping. This cervical traction neck pillow is not going to be hard like the tempurpedic pillow- and it is not going to be soft like a feather pillow. It is called a cervical support neck pillow because it supports your head and neck in the most natural position.

Sleeping on your Back or on your Side for Relief of Lower Back PainAlso, sleeping with pillows placed under your knees will help the lower back pain ease. You can buy fancy positioning products such as a knee elevator.
This position of sleeping will decrease the pressure placed on the lower back muscles and bones. IF you sleep on your side, take a pillow and put it in between your knees. For sleeping on your side you can try the spinal relief pillow: perfect for placing in between your legs when sleeping on your side.

Also, using a heating pad on your neck and lower back will help to decrease pain and calm the muscles down.

"I awake with neck and shoulder pain daily"....

Dealing with Neck Pain and Shoulder Pain can make sleep impossible- Choosing the right neck pillow is very important
We recently received the following email from a desperate customer looking for the right neck pillow...

Hi, im pretty new to picking a pillow for my cause i was hoping you could help me. I am a side sleeper and awake with neck and shoulder pain daily, mainly on the right side because that's the shoulder i lay on. I may have a pinched nerve but have yet to see the doc. Any sugesstions i would greatly apprciate and would give a try. Thanks ~ Davinder

Dear Davinder,

Thank you for your email- I think that I would recommend a cervical traction neck pillow for you. This cervical support pillow has two functions: support and traction. The Cervical traction Neck Pillow is for side and back sleepers. This pillow is particularly good for patients who suffer from a disc herniation in the neck or a “pinched” nerve. The traction part of the pillow is designed to support your neck in the proper cervical curve and also to maintain proper alignment when you are sleeping.

Because of the special design of the pillow, it back take a few nights to get used to. My suggestion would be to try the CLT pillow using the neck roll side of the pillow to begin with - also use the pillow for a few hours each night and then go back to your regular pillow. Slowly use the pillow a few hours greater each night. Some soreness and achiness is normal for some of our patients because they are not used to a pillow with this built in support for the neck. I am also going to give you a link for neck stretches that you can do in the A.M: arc4life.com/neckstretches. Make sure you do these only to the point of feeling a stretch, not to the point of pain. Davinder, you will notice that you may only be able to bend your neck in a small range of motion in the beginning, but this increase as you continue the neck stretches.

For more information about a pinched nerve in the neck, visit the Neck Pain Support Blog.

I hope this helps- IF you have any more specific questions about this neck pillow, please email me directly at arc4life[at]Cox.net (change the [at] to @).

Choosing the right neck pillow based on your symptoms

Choosing the right neck pillow can be difficult because there are so many choices online, in the stores, and at your Doctors office. Which one is right for you? I would like to share a few emails that we have received in the past month about this very topic of choosing the right neck pillow:

Email #1

I was all set to order one of your pillows but now I am a little confused. I really do not have a medical problem. Please recommend one of your pillows for me. I wake up several times during the night uncomfortable with neck and shoulder pain. In the past I owned a contour memory foam pillow which I did not like. That pillow made my jaw ache. I am 5'3" tall, weigh 150lbs. Please recommend the right pillow for me. -Osi

Answer: I would recommend the cervical traction neck pillow for Osi. Because she has tried a countour memory foam pillow in the past, the cervical traction neck pillow will be a good firmness but not as hard as the foam. cervical traction neck pillow
This particular pillow is made of 100% polyester fiber and does not change based on temperature changes. She can sleep on her side or on her back. It would be advantageous to her to sleep on her back because then she can avoid contact with her jaw. Sleeping on her back can be also made more comfortable by putting pillows or a knee elevator under her knees, instantly taking the pressure off of her lower back.

Hi there! I have a question - I was recently told I have a straight neck due to the loss of curvature. I'm trying the 'Therapeutica' one from my Dr.'s office but it isn't too comfortable for me, when on my side. That pillow comes in different sizes. Since proper height of the pillow is important, can you tell me how your pillow works if one size is for all? I've been trying for a very long time to find a pillow that is comfortable. Thank you.- Michelle

Answer: In this case I would recommend the Cervical Traction Neck Pillow for Michelle. The reason is that she needs traction in her neck while she sleeps to put the proper cervical curve back in her neck. If Michelle is a petite-framed person that is of height less than 5.0 ft, I would recommend for her the linear gravity neck pillow Small. linear gravity neck pillow comes in 3 sizes This is an excellent support neck pillow- although it is not going to give as much traction in the neck like the cervical traction pillow, it will still give her good support under her neck in the c shape form, and the pillow will be proportionally sized for her. The Small Linear Gravity Neck Pillow is 20 inches x 13 inches in dimension. *** Incidentally, we have received many questions about the one size fits all for the cervical traction neck pillow. We have spoken to our manufacturing department and because of the design of the neck pillow, it cannot be made any smaller than what it is right now.

I have had cervical disc replacement surgery. I have been looking at your net traction pillow. I also have had lower back surgery and have been looking at your lumbar chair pillows. If I were to order either of these and they do not work, can they be returned? Thank you for your interest, and your response.- Marble

Answer: Yes, we have a 30 day return policy. Just contact us within 30 days and you can return any item. There is a 15% restocking fee and shipping is non refundable. Just email us at info@arc4life.com and let us know that you are returning the pillow back.

Email #4

I am interested in the Cervical Traction Neck Pillow. I'm trying to establish if it will be the right pillow for me. I have had neck and shoulder pain forever. I currently use a feather pillow and was told by my chiropractor to replace it. I am bascially a side sleeper and wonder if this pillow will help me and how hard it will be to adjust to using it. -Juhysleeping on your side with the cervical traction neck pillow
Answer::
Yes, you can sleep on your side and on your back with the cervical traction neck pillow.

Email #5

What would be the best sleeping pillow for somone with a problem in the 5th and 6th vertabrae that has been instructed to "get the curve" back into their neck? -Jatinder
Answer: The Cervical Traction Neck Pillow will be a good choice for a pillow because is designed to give you traction in your neck while you sleep. Traction, over time has been found to improve the cervical curvature in the neck. It would also be a good idea to use the traction device during the day- that will dramatically improve the cervical curvature of your spine. Check out the Pronex Pneumatic Cervical Traction Unit.
