I Don't Have Any Hand Weights?

    Working Out With Dumbells

So you don't have any weights at home...Don't let that stop you!

You can do isometrics - basically doing the motions without weight. The key really is to use that muscle group you want to target.

You can also use exercise bands, or even a towel.

You can even pick up a couple dumbbells at the store. They have them everywhere - you might have a Target or Walmart right near you.

I Want to Do More Exercise But My Neck Pain Prevents Me

    How can you Exercise even
if you are having neck pain
I recently wrote how we need to exercise our minds too. I remember being in graduate school, and I could not gain weight even when  I tried. Did I exercise? Sure. But did I physically exercise everything off that I ate? No Way. The thing was that I was busy and I studied all the time. I woke up, had breakfast, went to class, ate snacks throughout the day, went to lunch, went back to class, till 5 pm or so. and ate large dinner. I also went to the gym a few days a week before dinner.

So if you are physically hurt, try exercising the mind and keeping busy while you heal.

Now this is more for an acute injury that you foresee yourself healing up eventually. What about those chronic pain cases?

Here is what I want you to do: Devote a good deal of time to getting rid of this pain. Maybe you see a chiropractor regularly, then at home you do neck traction, maybe go for a massage a couple times, or maybe even acupuncture.

Forget about cost for a change. How much is it worth to you to get rid of this pain so it doesn't rule your life.

So that's it - devote your time to fixing this problem and do other things until you can work back up to the exercise routine you want.

Do you take care of yourself as good as you could?...

We’ve talked in the past about the things you must do to improve and maintain your health. You must eat right, exercise, get proper rest, manage stress, and maintain your spine and nervous system.

If you sleep with a neck pillow you cover two out of the five. You can improve and maintain your spine as well as get a good night’s sleep.

The body does a lot of its maintenance and repair when it’s at rest WHEN YOU GO TO BED! A neck pillow has a neck roll that helps preserve and improve the natural C-curve of the neck. Your brain is the main control center and off of that stems the spinal cord and then off of that comes the nerves. You were created with curves in the spine that keep the cord relaxed and allow for the best flow of nervous system messages. Oh yeah, your brain and spinal cord are protected by bone, that’s how important they are! Just using a neck pillow like the Cervical Linear Traction Pillow will automatically improve your health.

Having Solid Core Muscles can have Multiple Health Benefits

Your core muscles include your abdominals, back muscles, and pelvis muscles. Keeping them strong and toned can have multiple health benefits including:

    1. Improves strength
    2. Improves your posture
    3. Improves your range of motion and flexibility
    4. Makes it easier to perform activities of daily living such as taking out the garbage, loading the dishwasher, and lifting your laundry basket.
    5. Makes you less susceptible to neck and back injuries.
    6. Builds abdominal muscles- maybe even a “6-pack”
    7. Builds stronger back muscles.
    8. LOSE EXCESS STOMACH WEIGHT

When doing core exercises, make sure to keep proper form. Begin with just a few repetitions and slowly increase that number. It is also very important to breathe during exercise: slow and steady breathing is vital.

Here is an example of a core exercise designed to tighten and tone your abdominals:
    1. Fist, sitting on a chair, tighten your abdominal muscles and bring your belly button to your spine and hold for 6 seconds.
    2. As you do this, place your hand below your belly button to feel the stomach muscles.
    3. Relax and repeat 10-12 times.

The Positive Connection between Exercise and Alzhiemers Patients

Ahh...the benefits of exercise...enough just cannot be said about exercise.

Alzheimer's disease is one that robs a patients mind, their friends, family and loved ones. The International conference on Alzheimers Disease in Chicago recently revealed that patients with early Alzheimer's disease who exercised regularly saw less deterioration in the areas of the brain which control memory. The Benefits of Exercise and the connection with Alzheimer's

The study involved 121 people 60 and over, who were exposed to fitness tests while at the same time measuring measuring their white and grey brain matter and overall brain volume using MRI. Fifty-seven of the participants had early-stage Alzheimer's while the rest of the participants did not have dementia.

Reading the MRI's showed that a positive effect on the hippocampus region of patients' brains, an area which is important for both memory and balance. In an Alzheimer's patient, the hippocampus part of the brain is one of the first parts to suffer damage. Physical exercise has shown to slow age related brain cell death in healthy older adults.

Most importantly, a correlation was made between size of key brain areas associated with memory and fitness. Researchers discovered that patients with early onset of Alzheimer's had significant atrophy of brain tissue.

"This is the first study to get an inside look into specifically where these changes occur in the brain — we're able to locate the changes associated with fitness to the actual memory region, the hippocampus, which is a key area for Alzheimer's-related atrophy," said Robyn A. Honea, PhD, a lead investigator on the study. "This suggests that maintaining cardiorespiratory fitness may positively modify Alzheimer's-related brain atrophy."

The Study also noted "Higher fitness through increased physical activity has been associated with enhanced neuronal survival to brain insults, increased vascularization, and elevations of growth factors in areas important for memory,"

At present there is no cure for Alzheimers disease, and it is devasting for the patient and their families. It is reassuring to see that research continues to be done in this very important disease that affects so many. Simple exercise can allow early stage Alzheimer's patients to preserve their cognitive function longer.

Thank Goodness the Holidays are over ! Onward to 2008

Today I had a few patients say to me "Thank Goodness the Holidays are over"... It appears that for many, the holidays are a time of stress. Gift buying & giving, cooking, overeating, eating too many sweets, dealing with difficult people- all these are reasons for people to be stressed out during the holiday season. Well now that 2008 is here, and the christmas decorations and trees are finally coming down, we can all take a deep breath and relax. Take time out to relax, take care of your body, take care of your health. Write down goals for 2008 that you want to accomplish. The key word here is "write". Include in this goal list the following categories:

    • Personal goals
    • Financial Goals
    • Thing Goals

Also important is to write down steps that you will take to accomplish these goals. Make them realistic. So for example-
A personal goal for you may be to lose 10 lbs- Well write down an action step to accomplish this. Make it realistic. For example: to walk 10 minutes day every day for 3-4 days. Don't make goals that are out of reach. These can easily derail you in achieving your goals.

Work on your Goal List.... ReVisit this Goal List regularly- perhaps weekly or monthly. You will notice that your thoughts and goals will change and you will be amazed at how many and how quickly your goals will be accomplished. One of the main reasons for revisiting your goals regularly is too keep them fresh in your mind.

Wishing everyone a prosperous 2008- may all your goals be realized and more.
