Is Your Pillow Finished?

I recently talked to someone who told me she thinks her pillow is worn out.  She said that she has started getting headaches like she did a few years ago.

I knew right away that she was right, she needs a new pillow.  When something like this happens, it's a tell tale sign your pillow is losing support.  I've talked to people that start to get tingling into their fingers, neck pain, or another symptom.  It's most likely the fact that the pillow haslost support, and instead of maintaining the ideal neck alignment, your neck is flattening out and pressure is accumulating on nerves.

Make it easy on yourself, and as soon as a symptom presents itself, get a new pillow.  It'll have the right support, and if it gets rid of headaches for three years, it's well worth it.

"This Headache Is Terrible..."

Do You have a Bad Headache that Just Won't Go Away?
Do you Have a Headache That Just Won't Go Away?
You've got a bad headache and it just won't go away! Did you know that over 90% of headaches come from the neck? Yes, that's right! So that poor neck posture might be catching up with you. So it makes complete sense to correct your posture; especially in your neck.

One of the most common postural MISalignments is forward head, and with that often comes a loss of the cervical curve. So what can we doe to fix it? We can do chiropractic adjustments, we can do neck exercises, we can do neck traction, and we can use a neck pillow. A great thing with using a neck pillow (pillow has a roll in it for the neck curve), is that this one's done while you sleep!

I Have A Cervical Kyphosis, Can I Use A Neck Pillow?

here is what a kyphosis in the neck curve looks like
If you have a Kyphosis in the neck curve, you should be using a neck pillow. Here's the reason: Having a kyphosis in the neck means you not only lost the proper curvature but it has actually started to curve the opposite way. This reversed curvature can be only really at on spinal level or it can be a number of segments.

With a neck pillow you start to work in the normal neck curve. Someone with a severe misalignment like this may having to use a neck pillow very gradually. Sometimes such a drastic difference (no spinal curve to a normal one) can cause some soreness. Sometimes if someone comes into the office with headaches and they are recommended the pillow, sleeping on it all night their first night with it may bring on soreness but a headache.

So, read the instructions that came with your pillow. Use it gradually so your body has a chance to get used to it, and if you have a severe misalignment like a cervical kyphosis make sure you do this. The same thing will apply to someone with severe symptoms. These may include headaches, excruciating pain, and even vertigo.

Vibration Massage: Relaxes the Muscles but Stimulates the Nervous System too!

Stimulating the nervous system is extremely important in balancing the body and restoring function. It’s the imbalances in the body that lead to pain or some other symptom.

The reason muscles get tight or bind up into knots is imbalance. If there is pressure on the nerves and the muscles controlled by those nerves are not getting 100% of the messages they’re supposed to, things don’t work right. One muscle stays constantly tensed and shortened while the others are loose and move like they should. The constant tightness leads to inflammation and waste products building up, then there is more and more nerve pressure.

We have founds that a great type of massage is with a tool called the Jeanie Rub Massager. Not only does it massage tight muscles, but the vibratory massage stimulates the nerves. Doing this helps balance the nervous system. Research has shown that many health conditions are caused by one part of the brain or nervous system that is under-firing or over-firing. Restoring balance and correcting this can significantly improve symptoms such as neck pain. Other common similar conditions are headaches, numbness and tingling in the arms and hands, or carpal tunnel-like symptoms.

Poor Neck Posture can Run in the Family …

Spinal alignment can run in your family. If your parents have poor neck posture, you may have a genetic predisposition for that same poor posture.

Remember, posture is directly related to your spinal alignment. If someone presents with forward head posture, their neck spine has often lost some of its normal curvature and shifted forward. This, of course, will put pressure on nerves in the neck, causing neck and muscle pain.

I often see family members who exhibit family postural traits almost exactly. Someone will tell me that their mother often suffers from severe neck discomfort just like they do. And sure enough, they both have the same forward head or low right shoulder and neck shift, etc …

The lesson here: your posture is important and if corrected may fix your neck problems and other neck-related symptoms, like headaches or arm and hand pain and tingling. Your genes are essentially a path laid out for you, but you don’t always have to take that exact path. Your genes are constantly changing, so doing the right things can help create a healthier, pain-free you!

I have a lot of “Cracking and Popping” in my Neck, What could this be?

“My neck is always making noise, it doesn’t usually hurt much, but it feels good when it pops.” Usually what this means is that something is shifted out of place and the body is trying to correct it.

What you are hearing is simply a gas release in the joint similar to if you crack your knuckles. If this occurs occasionally and isn’t really linked with any neck pain or back pain then it’s fine. If, on the other hand, it seems to be occuring more often or you are experiencing neck pain, arm pain, headaches, or upper back pain, you may have a spinal segment out of place and along with a muscle strain.

What sometimes happens is: something gets shifted, this puts pressure on nerves. The body will then try to correct or compensate, usually by allowing the vertebrae above and below the one that is shifted and/or stuck, to move more easily. These are often the segments making all the noise.

So chances are, if things are still “cracking or popping” alot after a few days you may want to get your neck posture and alignment checked.
