The Difference Between Soreness and Pain
What is the difference between being sore and being in pain? Soreness is often a good thing; you are building muscle or stretching out ligaments, etc...
Those are two perfect examples actually. Let's say I do neck traction for too long or too many pounds; I will be sore. The body just isn't used to it and ligaments and/or tendons are being stretched. It'll feel like an ache.
Just like when you go work out or maybe lift weights for the first time in
awhile, you may be sore.
That's or main tell-tale sign - what were you doing that precipitated this painlike sensation. If you over-did a workout, or did it for the first time, you are using new muscle groups or at least using one that haven't been worked like that in a while - that's soreness, and is normal. Now if this persists for days and started following a awkward movement it can be pain.
My suggestion is to take a break or take it easy on that body part for the next week or until it feels better.

How To Easily Use The Trac-Collar
An Effective Way to Stretch the Cervical Spine
As you'll see in the video below, the Neck TractionCollar very easy to use. What you can't
easily see is the comfort of this unit as well.
The Trac-Collar is very comfortable and soft, it's easy to put on, you
can use it while sitting upright, and... it doesn't put any unwanted pressure
on the jaw or head.
Stretching the neck with this method allows disc spaces
to open, as well as neural foramen. This
relieves nerve pressure and allows inflammation to dissipate.

I have been Diagnosed With a Military Neck? What can you Suggest for home treatment?
A Military Neck basically means that you have a straightening of the cervical curve in your neck. Meaning that normally you should have a "C" shaped spinal curve if one was to look at you from the side profile on an x-ray. This also affects the discs in the spine. The fluid is forced out of the disc when the vertebrae are pushed forward. When the neck loses this C shape that is normal, they call it is a military spine. A straightening of the cervical curve has occurred.
How can this happen? Well it is not an overnight occurrence. It happens very gradually over time- often taking months or years. It can happen from such things as:
A military neck can be the cause of neck stiffness, aching and pain.
So what can help with this condition of the neck? Two things I am going to suggest: a special pillow and a device to help stretch your neck in the right direction. Your plan of action will be to use the traction device during the day for 10-15 min at a time and use a special pillow at night. Alongside with this, doing postural exercises will also be beneficial.
A specialized pillow with contours will help you get the proper curve in the spine. At first sleeping on such a pillow can be painful and cause soreness. However overtime it will help your neck and also you will sleep better with proper posture. One example is the arc4life traction pillow. For a more firmer pillow choice, the tri-core pillow is also great ( I would recommend the gentle version of this neck pillow).
A traction device to help you get the curve back in the neck is the posture pump 1000. This traction device stretches your neck in the C Curved shape. You can get upwards of 20 lbs of pressure with this traction unit. You have a lay down while you do this. Not only does the traction unit help to get the proper curvature in the spine, it also helps to hydrate the discs as well. Here is a video showing you how to use the posture pump hydrating the discs and helping you get rid of the military neck:
Off course we always suggest at arc4life that you have your cervical spine checked by a doctor to make sure you are cleared for neck traction. A proper consultation, examination and x-rays can help determine what your spine looks like. These are suggestions for treatment of a militatry neck, but keep in mind there are contra-indications to doing neck traction as well. So check with your Doctor first.

"This Headache Is Terrible..."
![]() |
Do you Have a Headache That Just Won't Go Away? |
One of the most common postural MISalignments is forward head, and with that often comes a loss of the cervical curve. So what can we doe to fix it? We can do chiropractic adjustments, we can do neck exercises, we can do neck traction, and we can use a neck pillow. A great thing with using a neck pillow (pillow has a roll in it for the neck curve), is that this one's done while you sleep!

An Easy Way to Stretch the Neck
One thing that makes a product great is easy-ability of use. This is why I like the Trac-Collar. Also, you can do it sitting up. If you're a multi-tasker like me, you can even read or watch tv if you like. Here's a video on how easy it is to do this kind of neck traction.
This type of neck stretcher can yield a lot of relief for someone who suffers from a herniated disc, bulging disc, spinal stenosis, degeneration of the spine or a pinched nerve in the neck.

The Traction Pillow For Side Sleepers...
When you look at the traction pillow, you can kind of guess that you need to sleep on your back for full traction. This is true, but guess what? You don’t need to sleep on your back all night. Sleep on your back to start, or at least lay on your back to start. This will ensure that you will get some good treef in for 5-10 minutes. You then may roll over to your side whether you know it or not. The 5 or 10 minutes in the “V” with the roll under your neck is good, and is much better than in the pust when you may have had no support at all.
I just talked with someone who loves the neck traction pillow. Why was I a little surprised? She said she only sleeps on her side. On your side the pillow is good too. First, it keeps your head and spine level versus tilted up or down. Next, just the comfort of the pillow helps many get their best night’s sleep in years.

Easy Neck Stretch with the Neck TracCollar
If you have been recently suffering with neck pain due to a herniated or bulging disc for example, your Doctor may have prescribed neck traction. If you have been looking for neck traction then take a peek at the Neck Traction Collar. This is an alternative to the over the door traction unit, and many health professionals have been recommending it to their patients. You don't have to deal with a weight bag, and hangar or sitting by a door doing your therapy; Simply put the trac Collar on just like you would a neck brace or a neck collar. There are two separate internal inflatable bladders; one for the right, one for left side. The traccollar gently stretches and relaxes neck muscles for pain relief.

Forward Head Carriage can Increase the Weight of the Head on the Spine …
![]() |
Foward Head Posture |
Forward head posture can actually increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds (Kapundji, Physiology of Joints; Vol. 3).
Basically, our spines are built with these curves in place to withstand the forces of gravity. It’s just like a set of building blocks; if you stack them up so they’re out of alignment, then they can’t balance either. In our spine it’s similar; instead of collapsing however, the body compensates for misalignments and pulls calcium out of the bone and makes spurs or fuses things up to stabilize. Unfortunately, this is a last resort protection mechanism and will, of course, contribute to nerve pressure and therefore pain.
Using neck traction and even the cervical traction neck pillow by arc4life.com can help restore neck alignment and reduce neck stress due to extra weight of the head. Also, don’t forget, bone is heavy, so you can imagine having all the weight of not only the skull but all the contents pressing down!

I See A Chiropractor, But My Neck Still Hasn’t Improved?
This can often happen if heor she hasn’t prescribed you with any traction or exercises. The key to getting rid of the neck pain is taking pressure off the nerves.
Essential to relieving nerve pressure is putting the spine in alignment. The chiropractic adjustments often do this temporarily, but without stretching the ligaments and strengthening certain muscles, it won’t hold.
So the best bet to not only relieve the pain, but also correct the alignment, is to utilize some adjustments but also have a regimen of cervical traction. My recommendations for best results are to 1) use the traction pillow at night, 2) work up to 10 minutes – 20 minutes of the posture pump home neck traction 3-5 times per week in the beginning and 3) see your chiropractor periodically or as recommended.
There are some other options out there as well. You may find one chiropractor works better for you than another, you may discover another doctor that helps you correct the spine, reduce stress, and improve your health. But the two best tools I have found thus far to help hold your adjustments and/or maintain your neck alignment are the cervical traction pillow and the cervical traction posture pump.

True Neck Traction with the Pronex Pneumatic traction unit
REAL NECK TRACTION – USING THE PRONEX PNEUMATIC TRACTION DEVICE- UNDERSTANDING NECK TRACTION
To start there are 2 kinds of neck traction. One that essentially just stretches you. This would be like a neck brace or over the door device or an air bubble type around the neck. This is similar to someone pulling your head upwards.
Doing this does open up the IVF’s which are your intervertebral foramen where the nerve roots exit off The spinal cord and travel outward branching out to more nerves going to various parts of the body. This type of traction gives short term relief, opening up the nerve holds temporarily taking pressure off the nerves and reducing inflammation. This traction also helps hold the neck in place so it heals better in someone with a trauma who cannot move their neck.
The kind of neck traction most people need and should use is traction that gives a gentle stretch about also restores the curvature in the neck.
The Normal “C” curve of the neck allows for the proper IVF spacing (in other words- space for the nerve roots to exit without any pressure). Having the normal neck curvature helps keep pressure of the nerves long term. This way pain goes away and stays away.
The Pronex neck traction device is the top of the line real neck traction to restore the neck curvature and help get rid of neck pain and other unwanted symptoms of pressure on your neck nerves.
The vast majority of neck pain sufferers and even headache sufferers can benefit tremendously from the use of this type of traction. The normal curve of the cervical spine is a huge piece to the puzzle of staying healthy and removing neck pain and other related symptoms.
The posture pump 1000 is also very good at restoring the neck curvature and when combined with neck stretches and exercises and other natural pain relief methods and muscle relaxing. Check out the The Neck Pain Relief Kit for fast and long lasting relief.

True Neck Traction - The Right Kind Of Neck Traction For Long Term Pain Relief
Many people get traction at a therapist’s office or do home traction. One kind of traction is where the neck basically only gets stretched. The other is where you get stretched but also it helps restore the neck curvature.
In the neck there should be a 40-60 degree C curvature. This is the best position for the neck spine because it leaves the spinal cord relaxed and all of the nerves can travel out of the back of the spine with no pressure or interference.
True neck traction is traction where the goal is to restore the cervical curvature because this can be a long term fix for nerve pressure and neck problems like pain and muscle tension.
Traction where the head is simply stretched is a short term fix. Often the most common type is “overhead traction” or “over the door traction”.
This is where some sort of harness is strapped onto your neck or head and there is a weight on the other end of the harness (usually over a door) creating the pull. Sometimes it’s done with small weights, or a water bag. This is similar to having someone gently pull upward on your head. It gives temporary relief.
By using true neck traction you can get relief that will last much longer. It has been said that any loss of the normal neck curvature is classified as a misalignment or subluxation of the spine. Any misalignment or subluxation puts pressure on nerves. Even a tiny misalignment can take away that nerve or those nerves’ ability to send the brains message to that particular part of the body.
This is why neck traction is often used by only people in pain and discomfort a lot of the time, but also used by people who show no symptoms of neck pain or soreness and the like.
A simple lateral x-ray of someone’s neck can show us what their neck curvature looks like.
Otherwise looking at one’s posture from the side can tell us a lot. The middle of the ear should approximately line up with the middle of the shoulder. A vertical line should be able to be drawn between these two points.
If it doesn’t line up then it’s another case of the dreaded “forward head posture”. If that head is protruded out forward there is a great chance there’s loss of some of the adequate neck curvature and alignment.

One day of working on the computer or reading with your head down most likely won’t change your neck curvature but prolonged poor posture or a whiplash type injury can.
Take the football quarterback example. The quarterback gets sacked, hit from behind as he was about to throw. His back arches back, his neck arches back, as he is hit at the torso level. Then his body is flung forward as the momentum and force of the tackler moves in that direction. His neck whips back, forward, and then back again as he hits the ground (“whiplash”).
So the quarterback’s spine was completely contorted, but he gets up, brushes himself of, and his spine shifts back into place.
The body is pretty amazing! A lot of the time it will shift right back into alignment. Sometimes, however, the spine doesn’t go back into place and we now have a misalignment. This can be of solely one vertebra (back bone) or most often, a group of the segments or vertebrae of the spine.
With loss of the neck curve (cervical lordosis) it’s often a group of segments that are misaligned. Again, this can happen through some kind of trauma, like taking a hard tackle to getting rear ended in your car. And it doesn’t always take much force at all actually. The loss of neck curvature can also be due to poor postural habits over time. Things like working on a computer multiple hours a day without a break; or continuous reading with your head down; or long drives that are stressful, to give a few examples.
This is why neck traction is so often used now. It’s the best way to restore the neck alignment to what it should be.
Correcting the curvature takes pressure of the nerves, reduces the inflammation, and relaxes the muscles. Neck traction not only helps people that have had trauma to the neck and clearly have sever neck pain, but it also helps prevent unwanted neck problems from arising.
Dr Matt Bellinger is a Chiropractor in Connecticut. He has written many articles on how to easily and naturaly relieve pain, and has helped hundred of patients in his clinic end their neck and back pain. He recommends specific pain relief and posture improving products at http://www.arc4life.com. Read more articles related to neck pain and cervical neck traction here. He recommends the Pronex Cervical Traction Unit for his patients home traction use. What is the Difference between the Pronex Cervical traction Unit and the Posture Pump 1000?
Pronex Cervical Traction Unit
Summary
The Pronex Pneumatic Cervical Traction unit is special because it cradles the reclining patient's head and neck on two soft foam cushions. One cushion supports the occiput (base of the head) and the other rests against the upper trapezius (upper shoulder area). An air-inflated bellows between them and provides more than 20 lbs of continuously adjustable traction. As the bellows expands, it lifts the head upward supporting the cervical curve and maintaining an even distraction (stretch) in the anterior (front) and posterior (back) cervical discs. Patients have total control over the amount of traction applied. Squeezing an inflator bulb increases the pressure, a release knob gently reduces it. There's no strain on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Type of traction:
The Pronex Pneumatic Cervical tractin unit provides an even distraction in the anterior and posterior cervical discs

Cervical Traction Posture Pump 1000
Summary
The Posture Pump® Cervical Traction Posture Pump 1000 is a unique and simple looking device which can be inflated to extend and stretch the cervical spine. It can be localized low, mid or upper cervical spine. The Cervical Traction Posture Pump carefully lifts and separates the neck and back joints in a unique way. Traction, hanging devices, massage units, vibrators, special pillows and regular exercise cannot. Special expanding air cells angled into the spine activate the "bellows or sponge-like" function of the discs, producing a warm, relaxed feeling through the neck and back. Patented up and down motion reinforces the spine's natural "c" curve shape and promotes joint lubrication, joint nutrition, flexibility and the correct posture.
Amount of Pounds of Pressure that can Be Applied:
An air-inflated bellows between them is capable of providing up to 8 PSI
Sizes Available:
The Posture Pump Neck Traction Unit comes in only one Size
Do the devices allow for relaxation of the muscles around the temporomandibular joint and the posterior cervical region?

The Dreadful Unwanted Muscle Spasm and one Researchers Story
Recently Mr. Dhaliwal presented to our office with left sided neck and upper back pain. Mr. Dhaliwal is a researcher who uses his computer quite a bit. He doesn't realize it but he when he types he keeps his shoulders up in a scrunched up manner and looks down at his keyboard at hours on end (doing research). He is also under a lot of stress at work to complete deadlines and this definitely does not help the situation. After a consultation and examination it was found that Mr. Dhaliwal was having muscle spasms of the neck and upper back muscles.
What exactly is a muscle spasm, you may ask? A Muscle Spams is an involuntary contraction of a muscle or a muscle group. It is often very painful. Many times a muscle spasm keeps a muscle's motor unit continuously firing. This motion of continuous flexion of the neck (looking down) can have a negative effect on the soft tissue and nerves of the neck and shoulder region. It is suggested to our patient that he take frequent breaks to stretch your neck as often as possible.
Without sufficient movement, over time, nerve supply flowing from the neck to the arms can be obstructed and lead to tingling or numbness in the arms and fingers and eventually, headaches. Just as there is a continuous flow between the fluids on a cellular level, there is also a certain natural flow, similar to electricity, within the nervous system. Whenever there is an obstruction of the nerve flow, the part of the body that is supplied by that nerve does not function at its fullest potential.
Because Mr. Dhaliwal is in acute pain today, one of the first things we do is use an ice pack for 10 minutes in the upper back and neck. We use a 9 x 16 tri-sectional ice pack because this will cover his upper back and neck area well.
We follow this up with the application of Biofreeze- a natural pain relieveing gel that works effectively on muscle spasms. Pressure is put on the upper trapezius as well as muscles of the neck with the Biofreeze similar to a deep tissue massage.
It is also suggested that Mr. Dhaliwal take more breaks during the day. The simple activity of standing up and walking can stimulate nerve flow and allow his muscles to relax. Simple stretches for the trapezius muscle are also suggested; To stretch the trapezius muscles you drop your arms to your sides and slowly rolling your shoulders in a circular motion. You can also gradually add light hand weights and gently raising the shoulders upwards towards your ears. This will allow the muscles to eventually become stronger. Strong muscles reinforce and support the joints, and the neck consists of many joints between the individual vertebrae. Mr. Dhaliwal agrees that this stretch is very simple, something he can incorporate into his day.

Finally, gentle cervical traction is also suggested. By placing a cervical roll or medium sized, rolled up towel under his neck, he can help relax the neck and shoulder muscles. Doing traction to his neck will support the cervical curve and increase the nerve and blood supply. Here is an example of a cervical roll: The Jackson Roll
