I'm A Stomach Sleeper? Is The Pillow For Me?

The special "V" design of the pillow helps to hold one on their back.  Stomach sleeping isn't great for your neck.  I do see patients that sleep on their stomach, and they will be in periodically with the complaint of neck pain.

We don't have the range of motion we once did when we were 2 years old.  You know how you see babies on their belly all the time... For adults however, it is difficult to maintain a 90 degree turn of the neck for most of the night.

This is why those individuals will present every so often with a neck issue.  The traction pillow actually will help one stay on their back.  It is for back or side sleepers and has helped many with this issue.

A look at Neck Range of Motion...

Our necks are built to flex, extend, rotate, and tilt to the side. Or, of course any combination of these. Here's the normal ROM (range of motion) in degrees:
  • Flexion 60 degrees
  • Extension 40 degrees
  • Rotation (turning) 90 degrees
  • Lateral bending (tilt) 45 degrees
If any of these are decreased we may have an issue. If it's not the same form side to side that can tip us off. The spine can be restricted or misaligned cause muscle imbalances and therefore a loss of that range. One may also have neck pain, upper back pain, or even shoulder pain.

Using the right neck pillow can help put your neck in alignment, balance the musculature, and ease pressure off the nerves.
