Kink in the Neck?...

Kink in the neck, stiff neck, crick in the neck, neck strain, whatever you want to call it...We are refering to the same type of thing. It most often comes about sleeping in an awkward position.

You know, sometimes those nights where yu are snuggled up to your husband or wife and although nice and warm etc., sometimes it's not the best neck position. Or that day when you are just beat, and you conk out in a funny neck position. Or that night where you zonk out on the couch without very good neck support. The list goes on.

Thank goodness for the traction pillow because it can not only help relieve a kinked neck but give you support and keep your head in a good position, preventing future neck kinks.

Lifestyle And Your Sleep!

We have all learned how important it is to eat right, exercise, manage our stress, get adequate rest, and maintain our spine to maximize our health. If we are missing any one of these things then we will not even be close to 100% health.

Here's a video from CBS Morning News showing Erica Hill as she works to improve her health and sleep with a busy lifestyle.

“I have a Hard Time Doing an Abdominal Workout because of my Neck Pain”

A lot of us do crunches or sit-ups to work our stomach, but the truth is there are a number of ways to get a good neck workout without doing typical crunches.

One is actually standing and doing knee raises. Another great one, which will especially hit the lower abs, is crunching the lower body without moving the upper back. This is the area most of us try to work on anyway. Some call this the muffin top area. It sounds a bit nasty, but it brings home the point of your belly hanging over the pants. Nobody wants this, and with the right exercises and advice, even neck pain sufferers can forget about avoiding their workout because of neck pain or stiffness.

Here’s how to do the last exercise I just talked a bit about. Lie flat on the floor with your arms at your side. Raise your legs up bringing your rear slightly off the floor, hold for a second or two, then relax and repeat. Notice how you can keep your upper back and neck immobile.

“My Neck Pain just Keeps Coming Back!"

"Thank Goodness the Pillow Keeps me Pain-Free when I Sleep!”

This can sometimes be the case. Why, you might ask? A couple of reasons: The main one we find is that there is something during the day that is re-triggering the neck discomfort.

For example, I once saw a patient who always watched his television at a 45 degree angle. The couch, actually his recliner I believe, faced 45 degrees from the TV. Basically, when he sat down he always looked 45 degrees to the left. This might not always be a big deal, but if you do this for 2 hours every night after dinner, maybe even conking out there for a bit with your head wrenched to the side, it may become an issue.

He literally re-arranged some furniture and shazzam: his pain stayed away. The pillow was actually improving his neck posture and neck alignment, but he was inadvertently shifting it back out of alignment with his TV watching. Come to find out it wasn’t just after dinner, but a little each morning and sometimes when he came home from work at lunch.

The Time Change Has Really Thrown Off My Sleep

Something that works really well is to take a short nap. When doing this however you want to make sure not to nap too close to you bed time. It’s recommended that your nap is approximately 2- 3hours before bed time.

There are a few things that can throw off sleep patterns. It’s not just a small time change. There can be a trip to a different time zone. This can be 1 hour but can also be a whole lot more. The same goes for a late night that your body isn’t used too or a night where something interrupts your sleep in the middle of the night.

The best thing to do is take what I call a power nap or two. Set your alarm to awake in 30 minutes. This will not only give you the boost you need but it will help get your body back on track. This is something that we will have to deal with no matter what. There will always be distractions, time changes, even long trips.

One thing we can control, that often interrupts sleep, is pain. If you suffer from neck pain or a stiff neck and it’s preventing good sleep, get one of our neck support pillows and get that well needed rest.

"My Prescription for Headaches may cause Migraines? Huh??"

Sometimes, the exact thing we get medication for is something it will in fact aggravate. It’s best to read all there is to know about medication before taking it, and to try to seek natural remedies first.

• Consumer reports survey reveals that antidepressants were no more effective than “traditional talk therapy.”

Here are the results of another consumer reports study: Medication for headaches can actually cause a headache.

• “Heart medication may cause heart failure”- this one I heard in a television advertisement.

I mention some of these reports and truths because we really need to be careful in what medication we are taking and for how long. The scary fact is that most have life changing side effects, even the biggest life changer you can imagine- life ending, in fact.

When it comes to back pain, neck pain, headaches or something related, try for natural pain relief first.
