Headache Misconceptions- What True and What is Myth?

  1. Over-The-Counter Medication Treat The Cause Of Your Headache

It's not right that drug companies are hiding from you that the headache relieving drugs they advertise don't actually target the real cause of your headaches.

Here's the real deal...These pills cover up your headache by simply disabling your brain's ability to feel your headache. That's why your headache comes back when the pills wear off!

If you tore your rotator cuff and just took pills so you didn't have to feel the pain, the pain would come back when the pills wore off; in fact the pain might be worse.

If these medications actually treated the root cause of your headache, then shouldn't your headaches go away permanently? But they don't.

Really, these headaches meds, cover up your symptoms. The ACTUAL cause of your headaches remains untreated and that's why you keep suffering.

  2. Headache Medication Can't Harm You

One thing many headache sufferers don't know about the drugs they take is that these pills are not 100% safe. In fact, a lot of the side effects you may experience are far worse than the headaches you're trying to cover up for a measly four hours of relief.

You see, the way these pills disable your ability to feel headaches is to disable a little hormone in your body that acts like a messenger to your brain. Of course, our bodies, being the highly tuned machines they are, have figured out how to use these hormones for more jobs than one. So
if you disable the hormone from doing just one job, it will also not do all the other jobs in your body.

This can lead to all sorts of problems. You can get something as minor as a rash, or you can have sudden liver failure or kidney problems. Even aspirin has been linked to causing unknowing users to suffer from deadly hemoragghic strokes.

It gets worse...you see, the more often you take these medications, the more your risk will skyrocket!

Also, medication seldom increases your body's ability to respond to stress appropriately, and it usually decreases your body's natural ability to fight disease!

  3. Stress Causes Headaches

Yes, stress is a part of living, but it is not the cause of headaches.

Have you ever heard of that saying, "only the strong survive" or "survival of the fittest"?

It's how your body adapts to stress that determines if "stress" will affect your health or how you feel.

So, in a minute, I will explain how you can quickly and easily increase your body's ability to adapt to stress.

  4. Headaches Go Away On Their Own

Tony Robbins has a saying, "The definition of insanity is doing the same things and expecting different results."

If you truly want to get rid of your headaches, then you're going to have to try something different; something natural, and hopefully drug free...and equally important, something that is proven to work.

Obviously, you wouldn't still be reading this report if you weren't concerned about your headaches. So please, for your sake, don't drop the ball and not take action; because as you will in a moment discover, you will have a chance to end your headaches once-and-for-all.

  5. All Doctors Know How To Treat Headaches

There's a saying that goes something like this..."If You're A Hammer, All You See Is Nails"

    Hammers hit nails...M.D.'s prescribe medication.

Expecting a different approach from your medical doctor will only lead to disappointment. That's why I wrote this report - to help headache sufferers like you.

Before we go any further, let me stress to you that there is a place for medication, but more importantly, the cause of the problem must be identified because the wrong diagnosis = wrong care.

And, if your doctor's treatment fails, you'll probably get even stronger medications or, in an extreme case, your doctor will recommend surgery. Personally, I think there are times when surgery is the only option, but in terms of headaches, there are natural alternatives that many times, work a lot better without the risks associated with invasive treatments.

In fact, if you really want great results without all the risk of drugs, doesn't it make sense to try a natural solution first?

  6. Your Problem Is Always Where Your Pain Is.

Even though you may be feeling your headaches in your sinuses or on the top of your head, that doesn't necessarily mean that is where the cause of the problem is located.

For instance, oftentimes people with a disc problem in their lower back get pain, numbness, or weakness in their legs, even if there's nothing physically wrong with their legs.

One of the most common causes of headaches that do NOT originate in the head is called a "Cervicogenic" headache.

"The Cervicogenic headache is a big word for a headache which has its origin in the area of the neck. The source of pain is found in structures around the neck which have been damaged. These structures can include joints, ligaments, muscles, and cervical discs, all of which have complex nerve endings. When these structures are damaged, the nerve endings send pain signals up the pathway from the upper nerves of the neck to the brain. During this process, they intermingle with the nerve fibers of the trigeminal nerve. Since the trigeminal nerve is responsible for the perception of head pain, the patient therefore experiences the symptoms of a headache."
    - Dr. Peter Rothbart, M.D.

You May Have A "Cervicogenic Headache" !

If you answer "Yes" to any of these SIX questions...

  1. "Has your neck ever experienced trauma?"

  2. "Have you ever been in a car accident?"

  3. "Have you ever played football or any other contact sports?"

  4. "Have you experienced many 'minor' injuries?"

  5. "Is your neck stiff or, at times, difficult to move?"

  6. "As a child, did you experience a fall off the swing, porch, down stairs, or any other 'minor' incident?"

If you answered "YES" to at least ONE of the following questions, your headache may be caused by a hidden problem in your neck but there's good news...it can be corrected!!!

A look at Ideal Posture from the side and from the rear

One of the key indicators of poor health can be a person's posture. Today I want to go over proper posture and what it really means. From the side and from the back (see below Figure A and Figure B)- what should you look like if you have perfect ideal posture- that is the key question.

When in a standing position, muscles are not activated to maintain proper posture especially if standing straight.

According to Kendall and McCreary* there are certain points on our bodies that are key to determine if we have ideal posture. From the side position, as shown in Figure A, a line drawn from the head to the toes (also known as a plumb line) will pass the following target points:

  1. Earlobe
  2. midway through the shoulder joint
  3. midway through the trunk
  4. through the greater trochanter (see figure C below)
  5. slightly in front of the lateral malleolus (see figure D below)

Figure C: Greater Trochanter

Figure D: Lateral Malleolus

If we look at an individual from the rear aspect as in Figure B, the plumbline should fall directly in the middle of the body, and we should see the shoulder and the pelvis align on the right and left. The head should be in a neutral position, the hips should be aligned and the feet should be turned outward slightly.

Why does a herniated or bulging disc cause neck pain?

Our cervical traction neck pillow often helps individuals who experience neck pain associated with numbness and tingling into the arms and the hands. In particular when a person has a bulging or herniated disc in the cervical spine, pressure is put on the cervical spine nerves. The cervical traction neck pillow puts the proper c curve in your spine when you are sleeping, taking the pressure off of your spine, thereby decreasing the symptoms related to a herniated disc. We received this testimonial from a neck pain sufferer:

"This pillow is fabulous. I had neck pain with tingling radiating down my arm to my index finger. (Obviously a bulging cervical disk/pinched nerve.) To treat myself, I stopped my usual exercise routines for awhile to let myself heal, took anti-inflammatories for a couple of weeks, bought this pillow and the books "Treat Your Own Neck Pain" and "Treat Your Own Back Pain." Long and short, I was 100% better after a few weeks without the huge expenditure of time and money required for treatment by doctors or physical therapists. A few months later, and I'm still pain free and have no physical restrictions whatsoever.

I have to wonder if the people who found the pillow uncomfortable did not follow the directions that say to ease into using it by gradually increasing the time of use. I, too, found it a bit uncomfortable at first, but that quickly passed by using it as directed. I'm still using it now b/c I'm such a believer. It provides light cervical traction while lying on your back (with an optional simple neck support if you turn it around). Better yet (at least for me), for long term use, it provides perfect support for your neck when sleeping on either side so long as you move to the proper position on the pillow as indicated by the directions.

I split my time between the US and Europe, and this pillow always goes with me. It's one of the best purchases I've made.

Simple tips to sleep

We have discussed in this blog the great importance of sleep and how we are affected when we do not get enough. These consequences of lack of sleep include less energy for physical activity and dealing with stress, difficulty concentrating, increased mistakes, more prone to accidents, and an immune system that is weakened and not at its best to fight illness.
Start your day off right with a good night’s sleep. Below are tips for better sleep:

  • Give yourself “permission” to go to bed. Put your “to do” list away and make sleep a priority.
  • Unwind early in the evening.
  • Develop a sleep ritual. Do the same things each night before you go to bed to signal to your body that it is time for sleep.
  • Keep regular bedtime and waking hours.
  • Create a restful place to sleep.
  • Sleep on a comfortable bed.
  • Exercise regularly, but avoid exercising late in the day.
  • If you drink coffee, avoid drinking the caffeinated beverage in the evening.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • If you drink, reduce alcohol intake. Drinking alcohol shortly before bedtime interrupts and fragments sleep.

Orthopaedically correct sleep is when you sleep in a position that does not cause stress to the spine, the muscular system, or nerves. The position that works well for most healthy people is the fetal position. A person lies on either side, with the legs flexed toward the abdomen and the back is also slightly flexed. This takes stress off the spine and allows the organs to spread themselves out, so there is less intra-abdominal pressure against the diaphragm. A neck pillow under the head or neck will deflect a lot of weight from the shoulder you are lying on. Try our Cervical traction neck pillow- it will give you good neck support while you sleep and also lightly traction your neck at the same time.

Loss of Curvature in the Neck- "military neck"

"oh my neck really hurts... I cannot turn my head" "My Neck is stiff..." - is that a constant health complaint for you? Neck pain affects many aspects of our life. Working on the computer, reading, looking back to check your blind spot while driving- can really aggravate neck pain and stiffness. For those who look further into it and have a proper examination with x-rays of their neck will find that they do not have a proper C-curve in their spine. Particularly this can be seen when we look at a lateral cervical spine radiograph:cervical spine x=ray showing a loss of cervical curve. Enough can not be said about the importance of the cervical curve. When bones of the spine lose their normal position or motion, sensitive nerves and blood vessels to the head can be affected. When spinal nerves and related tissues are stretched or irritated they can symptoms such as headaches and neck pain. Aspirin and medication may cover up these warning signs, but do not correct the underlying structural cause. Many patients with neck pain have lost the normal forward curve in the neck. Ultimately, this can affect the brain stem and spinal cord.

A customer who was dealing with neck pain, neck stiffness recently wrote in our website. This customer ordered a Cervical Traction Neck Pillow:

"I have been dealing with back and neck pain for 10+ years. My x-rays show a complete loss in the curvature of my neck, a permanent head tilt, and a curvature in my spine to compensate for my head tilt. I've been to the chiropractor again and again, tried roll pillows under my neck at night (so uncomfortable) and popped tons of advil. Minimal relief.

Then I ordered this pillow. The first night I used it I woke up the next morning with much less pain than usual. The next night I slept soundly and had even less pain in the morning. I have been using this pillow every night for three weeks now, and I wake up feeling great. The best part is, my neck is still okay by the end of the day! The pain stays at bay.

Sure the pillow takes a little getting used to, you can't move around much, but I am willing to sacrifice rolling around in bed at night for a pain free tomorrow!"

Stiff neck: The "Real Pain in the Neck"

To start, before we can tell if we truly have a "stiff neck". We need to know exactly what it is. A stiff neck is a neck that feels tight or sore and has some loss of one normal motion. We often can get a stiff neck from being in one position too long or straining the neck in some fashion. Most often someone may sleep in an awkward position or work in a certain position for an extended period of time that can cause pressure on a nerve.

Nerves in the neck spine supply our muscles. If we have pressure on those nerves the muscles may get irritated, inflammed or not in balance. This in turn can cause neck pain and/or neck stiffness.
Someone who has neck spine or neck posture that is out of alignment will be the most common person to have recurrent or chronic stiff neck. Add to this, the fact that if the person has an occupation where they continually put strain on the neck or someone with a pillow they are sleeping on that does not have good support. Also sleeping on your stomach can cause major neck stiffness or pain. Why is sleeping on your stomach a problem? To breathe we have to turn our head 90 degrees to the left or to the right. As we age, this is not only difficult but not good for extended periods of time when you are sleeping. stiff neck- the real pain in the neck
Our posture gives us insight into what our spine may look like. So if your sleeping posture is horrible for 6-8 hours every night, your body starts getting trained to shift to an unhealthy, abnormal posture or spinal alignment. And once out of alignment we will more easily get the symptoms of neck pain and stiffness.
To correct neck alignment and reduce bad posture the best things to do are as follows:

  1. Always be aware of your posture- if you are always in one position, move around. If you are constantly walking with your head down- look up more. If you have an uncomfortable work station- set it up to be more ergonomically efficient.
  2. Use a good neck pillow and avoid sleeping on your stomach. I recommend the cervical traction neck pillow by Arc4life.com.
  3. See a chiropractor or a physical therapist. Both professionals can give you good postural exercises. Doctors of chiropractic can also adjust or manipulate the spine to help restore neck alignment.

All of the above listed solutions are usually quick and easy to do and will pay off in the long run. Good neck posture and spinal alignment will reduce the incidence of stiff necks.
If you or someone you know is suffering from severe neck pain or neck stiffness currently or has chronic neck issues I would also recommnend using heat to loosen the muscles. Biofreeze is a great natural neck pain relief gel which helps tremendously. Apply to your stiff and sore muscles for 3-5 minutes. Apply ice for 10 minutes afterward. Use ice if there is any inflammation in the neck area.If this is a chronic neck pain issue, heat may also help.
The Trisectional Ice Pack is a perfect ice pack for around your neck and upper back. It includes straps that you can securely hold it in place. Arc4life's Trisectional Ice pack
Arc4life has all your neck pain relief products to give you relief of neck pain, so that it is no longer a pain in the neck !

Lose a few pounds with some good sleep

On Monday, I ate a full breakfast and continued to eat thoughout the day never feeling full, never satisfied. My lack of sleep along with my tossing and turning the night before was having an effect on my appetite. It had to do with hormones leptin and ghrelin. In particular, the quality and frequency of sleep has been shown to affect our hormones which in turn affect our appetite.

How Hormones Affect Your Sleep According to Michael Breus, PhD, (a faculty member of the Atlanta School of Sleep Medicine and director of The Sleep Disorders Centers of Southeastern Lung Care in Atlanta), leptin and ghrelin work in a kind of "checks and balances" system to control feelings of hunger and fullness, explains . Ghrelin, is produced in the gastrointestinal tract and it stimulates appetite. Leptin is produced in the fat cells and sends a signal to the brain when you are full.

And how does this affect sleep? Lack of sleep decreases the levels of leptin which means you don't feel as satisfied after you eat. This loss of sleep also causes ghrelin levels to increase, which means your appetite is stimulated causing you to want to eat more. These double action by ghrelin and leptin can lead to overeating therefore leading to weight gain.

Research shows that Lack of Sleep can increase weight.
Two studies have been conducted at the University of Chicago in Illinois and at Stanford University in California to study the relationship between sleep and weight gain. The study in Chicago involved 12 subjects whose hunger and appetite levels were noted. Subsequently, the men in the study were subjected to two days of sleep deprivation followed by two days of extended sleep. The Doctors studied their horomone levels, appetite and activity. The study showed that a lack of sleep decreased leptin levels and increased ghrelin levels. It was also noted that the subjects had a increase in appetite by 45%- specifically for high carbohydrate, calorie dense foods.

It was in the Stanford California study, about 1,000 volunteers reported the number of hours they slept each night. Doctors then measured their levels of ghrelin and leptin, as well as noted their weight. Those who slept less than eight hours a night not only had lower levels of leptin and higher levels of ghrelin, but they also had a higher level of body fat. What's more, that level of body fat seemed to correlate with their sleep patterns. Specifically, those who slept the fewest hours per night weighed the most.

So here is an easy way to keep the weight off- make sure you get the proper amount of sleep each night. It is so much simpler than taking pills, or going crazy with excercising or watching what you eat. It will not only keep your appetite in check, but it keep you satisfied throughout the day- preventing unnecessary pounds.

Be Smarter with Sleep. How your Perfomance is affected by your sleeping habits

I cannot tell you how many times I have crammed for a test, all night- then awoken the next ready to write this test. Yeah Right. I wish I had been smarter about getting the right amount of sleep especially before a major test !

Every person needs a certain amount of sleep- and this number varies across the board. If a person who needs eight hours of sleep per night only gets six, their "performance" throughout the day will be affected. Just a simple two hours of sleep loss can be put into perspective the performance affected:

  • Decreased alertness
  • Decresed attention span
  • Reaction time slows down
  • Poorer judgement
  • Reduced awareness of the environment and situation
  • Reduced decision-making skills
  • Poorer memory
  • Reduced concentration
  • Increased likelihood of mentally ‘stalling’ or fixating on one thought
  • Increased likelihood of moodiness and bad temper
  • Reduced work efficiency
  • Loss of motivation
  • Errors of omission (making a mistake by forgetting to do something)
  • Errors of commission (making a mistake by doing something, but choosing the wrong option)
  • Microsleep (brief periods of involuntary sleeping that range from a few seconds to a few minutes in duration).

A tired person is more accident prone, judgement impaired and more likely to make mistakes and poor decisions. Staying awake for 24 hours leads to a reduced hand-to-eye coordination that is similar to having a blood alcohol content of 0.1. This is one of the reasons why a lack of sleep leads to road accidents and work injuries. Sleep deprivation can also affect a child’s school performance, and could be linked to increased risk of emotional problems such as depression. So when you put your "thinking cap" on, realize how important last night's sleep is.

Approximately 200,000 automobile crashes occur each year because of drivers' excessive sleepiness. Excessive daytime somnolence also produces impaired learning and cognition[4,5] and has been implicated in the occurrence of major catastrophes, such as the Three Mile Island Meltdown (1979), the erroneous launch of the Challenger space shuttle (1986), and the grounding of the Exxon Valdez (1989). Don't Worry...Be Happy by sleeping better

Today I want to examine a very serious side effect of not sleeping properly. A condition that will affect all aspects your life- your work, your activities, your daily mood- DEPRESSION.

A Lack of sleep can produce an increased amount of stress hormones creating a body that is always in a "hyper" state. A lack of sleep can bring on depression and vice versa. A Study published in the Journal Sleep (July 1st 2007) showed that a chronic lack of sleep increases an individual chances for developing anxiety disorders and depression.

This study was conducted by Dr Dag Neckelmann, PhD, of Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen, Norway. It was based on data collected from 25,130 adults from two general health surveys. One group of patients who were classified as insomniacs and another that were healthy sleepers. Dr. Neckelmann found that the group with chronic lack of sleep had increased associations to having developed anxiety disorders and depression.

A lack of sleep or insomnia can lead to vicious cycle of depression that will affect all aspects of your life.

Get rid of the bags under your eyes from poor sleep

You wake up feeling groggy, tired and you look terrible. That is a definite truth that you don't look your best when you have'nt slept well. A lack of sleep means a change in metabolism similar to the changes that occur when one ages. As we get older, growth hormones play a very important role in how we look as we age.
Growth hormones are responsible for:

  • Enhancing your immune response thereby allowing for greater resistance to disease and infection.
  • Reducing body fat without dieting
  • Increasing muscle mass with exercise
  • Bolstering energy, strength, and stamina
  • Improving bone density
  • Improving skin tone
  • Sharpened memory and heightened well-being

We should do everything we can to keep our growth hormones as high as possible and one method of doing that is to get adequate amount of sleep each night. The Growth Hormone has been called the Fountain of Youth- No doubt one simple way to get more of it is to sleep well.

Proper Sleep equals better control of Blood Pressure and CardioVascular Health

According to Sheldon Sheps, M.D. of the Mayo Clinic A report published in the May 2006 medical journal Hypertension suggests that long-term sleep deprivation increases the risk of hypertension (high blood pressure). High Blood Pressure is defined at 140 mm Hg or greater (systolic pressure) and 90 mm Hg or greater diastolic pressure
In one study, 4810 group members (ranging in age from 32 to 86) slept less than 6 hours a night. It was found that this group had over 2x risk of high blood pressure. This association was not significant in participants older than 59 years.

Heart Disease. Another long term study looked at loss of sleep and Heart Disease. This study group included healthy female nurses. Almost 2% of those who said they slept less than five hours a night developed heart disease over a 10-year stretch This compared with 1.1% of those who reported sleeping seven to eight hours a night. Those sleeping more than nine hours a night were also at increased risk. This study also showed an increase in diabetes in this group involving nurses.

Dying prematurely. A six-year study of more than a million adult Americans showed that premature deaths were more common among those who reported averaging less than 4.5 hours or more than 8.5 hours of sleep a night.

The skinny on being happier, healthier and lighter- Better Sleep

A recent Readers Digest Article (October 2007) caught my eye- and it anything BUT put me to Sleep. The importance of getting a good night sleep cannot be over rated. So many reasons to make sure you get to bed on time:

  1. It will keep you healthier- People who sleep less tend to have higher blood pressure. A lack of sleep has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack and increase in weight. People who sleep live longer and just live better. Click here to read more
  2. Sleep will make you look better and feel better - One of the main reasons is that it will keep your hormone levels higher- especially growth hormones. Click here to read more
  3. Sleep will keep you happier- People who don't sleep produce an increased amount of stress hormones creating a body that is always in a "hyper" state. A lack of sleep can bring on depression and vice versa. Click here to read more.
  4. Sleep will make you Smarter- Not sleeping can affect concentration and problem solving skills. Just like drinking too much, not sleeping can have the same effect on you physically and cognitively. Click here to read more.
  5. Sleep will help control your Weight- There is an obesity epidemic in the United States- one the reasons is the lack of sleep. It can affect what you decide to eat. Insomniacs tend to crave food high in carbohydrates and sugar. Mainly because sleep loss decreases insulin sensitivity, putting an individual at a higher risk for type 2 diabetes. This can cause a decrease in metabolism and an increase in appetite. Loss of sleep decreases the levels of a hormone called leptin but increases ghrelin (hormone that makes you feel hungry. Click here to read more.

So to be healthier, happier and lighter do everything you can to make sure you get the proper amount of sleep every night. You spend 1/3 of your life sleeping- are you getting the most out of it? We will discuss each of the above facts in more detail in the next few posts. Also we will discuss ways to make sure you get proper sleep. S

Gut Health And Its Involvement In Total Body Health!

My friend contacted me again a week later. Good news, he's feeling much better with his dizziness and stomach problems. So what made the the difference? Unbelievably he told me he sat down to watch television with his wife. She had recorded Oprah and wanted to watch it. That particular episode had one of her frequent guests - Dr Oz - who had been talking about the gut and the intestinal track.

From watching the episode he realized he wasn't getting really any fiber in his diet which was why he was "impacted". literally from eating more raw vegetables, taking extra fiber and taking a probiotic supplement, in just 1 week he has started going to the bathroom more regularly, has felt less dizziness, and has felt better overall.

Chronic Dizziness - an annoying health condition

Recently my good friend M.J. came to me with a condition of dizziness that has been going on for about a year. The dizziness started after a plane trip in October 2006-and ever since that time he has has been dealing with this very annoying symptom. He said that this dizziness affects all facets of his life. He has tried chiropractic which has helped but this has not been a permanent solution. He has tried using peroxide to dissolve excess ear wax (sometimes a build up of wax can cause dizziness and balanced issues). He has changed his diet: he has cut out of his diet: caffeine, foods with preservatives/ additives, and alcohol as much as possible. However, the dizziness continues still and the year mark is coming up. At one point he thought he may have Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, and therefore did excercises called the BRANDT-DAROFF EXERCISES. MJ also states that as of recent his stomach has been giving him problems and that he has not been regular going to the bathroom like he has been in the past.

It is hard to pinpoint exactly what caused this dizziness. MJ states that he has been to his PCP- the Dr suggested it may be due to a virus. There was no outer ear problems, no build up of ear wax. His Chiropractor has given him good advice and after he gets treated there he feels good for a while.

The symptoms have come and gone (he was vey dizzy the day after the initial plane trip, but then slowly became tolrable) but symptoms have recently been slightly worse than usual along with more stomach pains. He is currently persuing some ways to improve gut and stomach health to see if this makes more of a difference.

I'll keep everyone updated next time I hear from him.

A Natural Solution for Immediate Headache Pain Relief

It is estimated that between 40 and 50 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches. Headaches are believed to be the result of an electrical and chemical imbalance at centers in the brain that regulate blood vessels around the head and neck. The cause of Headaches can be a variety of reasons such as stress, reactions to certain foods, hormonal imbalances, genetic predisposition, fatigue, noise, glare.
Headaches can present in a variety of forms including:

Tension headaches are the most common type and are typically caused by muscle contraction in the head and neck. Symptoms of a tension headaches include soreness in your temples, a tightening band-like sensation around your head (a "vice-like" ache), a pulling feeling, pressure sensations, and contracting head and neck muscles. This is why physicians may refer to tension-type headaches as "muscle contraction" headaches. Your symptoms can also include a tightness in your neck (as if your "head and neck were in a cast"); only certain positions seem to provide relief. The headache surfaces in your forehead, temples or the back of your head and neck. These headaches can be episodic or chronic (going on for months and not having any pain relief from over the counter medications)

Vascular headaches, which include cluster and migraine headaches, are the result of overactive blood vessels.

Migraine Headaches can last between 12 and 24 hours and is often accompanied by nausea and other symptoms.

Cluster headaches generally lasts from 30 to 45 minutes, although it might persist for several hours before it disappears. They are called cluster headaches because the attacks come in groups. The pain arrives with little, if any, warning, and it has been described as the most severe and intense of any headache type. Unfortunately, it can reoccur later in the day. Most sufferers experience one to four headaches a day during a cluster period.which typically affect men, are accompanied by throbbing pain around one red, watery eye, and nasal congestion.

Sinus headaches is characterized by congestion and steady pain behind your face that worsens if you bend forward. Sinuses are filled with air, and their secretions must be able to drain freely into the nose. If your headache is truly caused by a sinus blockage, such as an infection, this will probably be accompanied by a fever. Having an x-ray will confirm a sinus blockage. Your physician's treatment might include antibiotics for the infection, as well as antihistamines or decongestants.

Solutions for Headache Relief:

  1. Acupressure Points: Particularly your temples and at the top of your nose (use your index finger and thumb and press for 5-10 seconds
  2. Chiropractic manipulation to the cervical spine
  3. Massage therapy for the neck muscles, particularly the suboccipitals and the cervical paraspinals
  4. Cervical Neck Traction may help stretch your neck muscles proving instant relief
  5. Acupuncture
  6. Watch what you eat: Trigger foods include MSGS, caffeine, certain chemicals such as dyes in processed foods, tanins in wine
  7. The Headache Ice Pillow or relieving your worst headaches.

The Case of the Heavy BackPack

Last month Bobbie (name changed for privacy), presented to our office for neck pain mid back pain, and lower back pain after a rear end motor vehicle accident in which she was a seat belted passenger. Bobbie is a 13 years old and weighs about 100 lbs and looks like a typical bright eyed student. In early September she started school. After that first day of school, the first thing she told me was that her back was really hurting her because she had an enormous amount of textbooks to carry back and forth. On top of that she stated that carrying her saxaphone aggravated her back as well. Arc4life.com

I gave her mother two suggestions.
#1. Get a rolling backpack with wheels.
#2. Photocopy the pages out of the textbooks and just decrease the amount of books to bring home.Talk to Bobbie's teachers about lightening the load, maybe even buy a 2nd set of the most used textbooks for home.
#3. Get an ergonomic BackPack that distributes the weight from the shoulders to the hips.
Well, my first suggestion did not go over too well. Apparently it is not cool for a six-grader to be rolling around a back pack. Jeesh!!! Practically, Bobbie also mentioned that her school has many staircases that would make it difficult for her to lift her backpack during the day in between classes. Suggestion #2 Got an automatic head shake from Bobbie- she must be studying weeks ahead every night !

Individuals should carry no more than 10-15% of their body weight in their backpack. For example, for a child who weighs 100 lbs, this means they should carry 15 lbs or less. These days, you add in a lunch, textbooks, your pencil case and gym clothes--- you may well over be that amount. In the case of Bobbie textbooks caused her maximum load to go over the allowed amount.

A properly fitted BackPack enhances the body's natural ability to carry weight, reducing stress on the body up to 80% and lightening the effective load up to 50%.

Arc4life offers AirPacks Backpacks- these supportive backpacks have a great support system that is created by a hidden adjustable air chamber placed in the lower back which transfers the weight to the hips. The wide, foam-cushioned straps have buckles at the top and bottom to provide a two point adjustment. AirPack BackPacks promote proper posture
The Backpacks also allow for self- adjusting side to side to provide a better fit accross the shoulders. There are also side cinches to pull the weight of the backpack closer to to the persons center of gravity, therefore increasing balance and stability. The great thing about the AirPack BackPacks is that they come in three sizes:

  • Small: Ideal for elementary or middle school students (12" x 16 1/2" x 7"). Click Here

  • Medium: Ideal for middle school or high school students (11 1/2" x 17" x 8"). Click here

  • Large: Ideal for high school or college students (12 1/2" x 18" x 12"). Click here

As for Bobbie, her mother mentioned that she did indeed buy her daughter a rolling back pack last year, but that it was not "cool" enough for her to be seen with it at school. Her mother stated that she would order a specialized AirBack BackPack for Parvati. I made a few more suggestions for Parvati and her backpack ways:
  • Always use both shoulder straps.
  • Tighten the backpack straps so that the Backpack is close to the body as possible
  • Pack light as much as possible.Make the backpack does not weigh more than 10-15% of Parvati's body weight
  • Make use of the school lockers. There is no need to carry all of your textbooks all day in school.
  • Organize the backpack so that all the compartments are properly used
  • When bending forward, make sure you bend at the knees, especially with a heavy back pack
  • Learn back- strengthening exercise to prevent injury and strain.

A Deeper Look at Cervical Neck Traction Systems

What is the Difference between the Pronex Cervical traction Unit and the Posture Pump 1000?

Pronex Cervical Traction Unit
Summary
The Pronex Pneumatic Cervical Traction unit is special because it cradles the reclining patient's head and neck on two soft foam cushions. One cushion supports the occiput (base of the head) and the other rests against the upper trapezius (upper shoulder area). An air-inflated bellows between them and provides more than 20 lbs of continuously adjustable traction. As the bellows expands, it lifts the head upward supporting the cervical curve and maintaining an even distraction (stretch) in the anterior (front) and posterior (back) cervical discs. Patients have total control over the amount of traction applied. Squeezing an inflator bulb increases the pressure, a release knob gently reduces it. There's no strain on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Type of traction:
The Pronex Pneumatic Cervical tractin unit provides an even distraction in the anterior and posterior cervical discs

What is the importance of traction?

Simply, To correct the alignment of the spine. Our spines are ergonomically built to withstand the forces of gravity. When looking at an individual from the front or back the spine is straight up and down. From the side however we have distinct curvatures that are there for a reason – so our spinal cord is relaxed with no tension and our nerve roots coming off the spinal cord have no pressure and interference. Our spine is at it’s strongest position with this alignment as well. And don’t forget, why is it important we are in optimal alignment? Not only because it is the most beneficial for strength of our spine but because it is the healthiest position as well. This is important for the cervical (neck) spine as well as for the lumbar (low back) spine. Putting any pressure on nerves will decrease the bodies ability to perform at it’s maximum. Any pressure on nerves decreases your health.

The best way to examine if your spine is in proper alignment is through x-ray but looking at one’s posture can often be a dead give away of poor spinal alignment and positioning.

There are also very common misalignments and postural patterns that are seen in a large segment of the population as well as people with certain occupations as well as spinal malalignments that run in families.

Arc4life is proud to offer traction systems and products for pain relief for the Cervical Spine, as well as for the Lumbar spine.

Good Morning America...Cervical Traction Neck Pillow makes it on air

Well, its official, our Cervical Traction neck pillow has made its debut on the Abc's Good Morning America television program. Monday (July 31, 2007) Afternoon at 2:00 pm a producer from ABC called our offices and asked we could ship two cervical traction neck pillows immediately to their offices. Well, that was kinda of impossible because we are located in Central Connecticut. So at 4:30 that afternoon, a driver came and picked up the pillows. On the show, they showed several different type of pillows and in the last 10 seconds the Cervical Traction Neck Pillow was shown....Arc4life was overjoyed and honoured to be a part of their pillow news story !

The Dreadful Unwanted Muscle Spasm and one Researchers Story

Recently Mr. Dhaliwal presented to our office with left sided neck and upper back pain. Mr. Dhaliwal is a researcher who uses his computer quite a bit. He doesn't realize it but he when he types he keeps his shoulders up in a scrunched up manner and looks down at his keyboard at hours on end (doing research). He is also under a lot of stress at work to complete deadlines and this definitely does not help the situation. After a consultation and examination it was found that Mr. Dhaliwal was having muscle spasms of the neck and upper back muscles.
What exactly is a muscle spasm, you may ask? A Muscle Spams is an involuntary contraction of a muscle or a muscle group. It is often very painful. Many times a muscle spasm keeps a muscle's motor unit continuously firing. This motion of continuous flexion of the neck (looking down) can have a negative effect on the soft tissue and nerves of the neck and shoulder region. It is suggested to our patient that he take frequent breaks to stretch your neck as often as possible.upper trapezius and cervical neck muscles
Without sufficient movement, over time, nerve supply flowing from the neck to the arms can be obstructed and lead to tingling or numbness in the arms and fingers and eventually, headaches. Just as there is a continuous flow between the fluids on a cellular level, there is also a certain natural flow, similar to electricity, within the nervous system. Whenever there is an obstruction of the nerve flow, the part of the body that is supplied by that nerve does not function at its fullest potential.
Because Mr. Dhaliwal is in acute pain today, one of the first things we do is use an ice pack for 10 minutes in the upper back and neck. We use a 9 x 16 tri-sectional ice pack because this will cover his upper back and neck area well. 9x16 trisectional ice pack for neck and upper back
We follow this up with the application of Biofreeze- a natural pain relieveing gel that works effectively on muscle spasms. Pressure is put on the upper trapezius as well as muscles of the neck with the Biofreeze similar to a deep tissue massage. Biofreeze natural pain relieving gel
It is also suggested that Mr. Dhaliwal take more breaks during the day. The simple activity of standing up and walking can stimulate nerve flow and allow his muscles to relax. Simple stretches for the trapezius muscle are also suggested; To stretch the trapezius muscles you drop your arms to your sides and slowly rolling your shoulders in a circular motion. You can also gradually add light hand weights and gently raising the shoulders upwards towards your ears. This will allow the muscles to eventually become stronger. Strong muscles reinforce and support the joints, and the neck consists of many joints between the individual vertebrae. Mr. Dhaliwal agrees that this stretch is very simple, something he can incorporate into his day.
the jackson roll traction
Finally, gentle cervical traction is also suggested. By placing a cervical roll or medium sized, rolled up towel under his neck, he can help relax the neck and shoulder muscles. Doing traction to his neck will support the cervical curve and increase the nerve and blood supply. Here is an example of a cervical roll: The Jackson Roll

Why is the C-Curve so Important In Your Neck?

X-rays are a very important tool for looking at your spine- When looking at a front view X-ray of your neck (cervical spine) and low back (lumbar spine), the spinal bones (vertebrae) must be straight up and down. The bones must not be rotated nor tilted and no curvatures (scoliosis) should be present.

The side view X-ray must reveal three 63-degree arcs- 3 "C" Curves. The most important arc is in the neck (cervical spine) and should range between 34 and 43 degrees between C1 and C7 (the first and last cervical vertebrae). This cervical arc is known as the “Arc of Life” because mental life impulses travel directly from the brain down this part of the spinal cord to bring life to the rest of the body. Losing your Arc of Life causes the most severe obstruction to the brain, spinal cord and nerves, also known as the Central Nervous System (CNS)

If your CNS is unhealthy, you cannot become truly healthy by exercising or eating right alone. You can be healthier, but you cannot be at “normal” or optimal. Any “abnormal” position of the spine, misalignment of the bones, or any changes in these curves indicate a serious problem. It is absolutely vital to understand this point--any changes from “normal” will interfere with and eventually damage the Central Nervous System. Interference and damage to the Central Nervous System will always result in “abnormal” function of the body, improper healing, and poor, abnormal, or less than optimal health.

“ … Posture affects and moderates every physiologic function from breathing to hormonal production.”

--C. Norman Shealy, MD, Roger K. Cady, MD, et al; APJM, 1994, Vol.4p. 36
Normal Neck Curve

When bones of the spine lose their normal position or motion, sensitive nerves and blood vessels to the head can be affected. When spinal nerves and related tissues are stretched or irritated they can symptoms such as headaches and neck pain. Aspirin and medication may cover up these warning signs, but do not correct the underlying structural cause. Many patients with neck pain have lost the normal forward curve in the neck. Ultimately, this can affect the brain stem and spinal cord.

The perfect neck pillow for an airplane journey

This weekend we were travelling to Phoenix, Arizona. We were sitting on the airplane trying to catch a few minutes of sleep for the very long long journey. The older woman next to my husband kept drifting forward and to the left side (onto my husbands shoulder actually)- she awoke many times and looking very uncomfortable. This is typically what happens when he gets the middle seat. My husband is very nice person, and so he just shrugged his shoulders and let woman use him as a pillow. The smart travellers (the seasoned travellers- the ones who were the first to stand in the Southwest A line) I duly noted had this special U shaped pillow- they looked the most comfortable. I was looking on, quite envious wishing I had thought of bringing my travel pillow with me. Some people just think of everything !

And here we have the Travel Core Memory Foam Pillow- perfect for home or traveling on the airplane. The Viscoelastic foam responds to body heat and therefore better conform to the special shape of your particular head and neck. This neck pillow helps support your head and neck so you can relax. You can use with the lobes down for support while seated. Use with the lobes up or down for support while lying down. For me this pillow’s compact size makes it very easy to transport. Next time, I will pack and take my sleeping arranagements on the airplane a lot more seriously.

    1. Article - Mild brain injuries linked to sleep disorders
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Experiencing a mild traumatic brain injury may increase the risk of developing a sleep disorder, and a good portion of these appear to be based on disturbances in the body's normal circadian rhythm, according to the results of a new study.
"As many as 40 to 65 percent of patients with minor traumatic brain injury complain of insomnia," Dr. L. Ayalon, of the University of California, San Diego, and colleagues write in the medical journal Neurology.
In a small study of patients with minor traumatic brain injury, who were also suffering from insomnia, Ayalon's team found that about one third of the patients had circadian rhythm sleep disorders.
The researchers examined the physiologic and behavioral characteristics related to circadian rhythm in 42 patients who sustained mild traumatic brain injuries and were having problems with insomnia.
Circadian rhythm sleep disorders are disturbances in the 24-hour sleep and wake cycle, which may be related to abnormalities in neurological mechanisms or triggered by changes in an individual's schedule.
The subjects underwent a variety of tests, including melatonin and temperature measurements, and imaging tests. They were also evaluated overnight in a sleep laboratory and completed a questionnaire to determine the time of day they felt the most awake, or their "circadian preference."
Fifteen of the 42 patients (36 percent) were diagnosed with a circadian rhythm sleep disorder. Eight subjects had a delayed sleep phase syndrome and seven had an irregular sleep-wake pattern.
All eight patients with delayed sleep phase syndrome had a 24-hour regular temperature rhythm, but only four patients with irregular sleep-wake patterns displayed a similar daily rhythm.
Patients in the irregular sleep-wake pattern group also had a smaller range of 24-hour temperature rhythm compared with those in the delayed sleep phase syndrome group. The authors note that the patients described their wake-sleep patterns that fit the clinical diagnosis they received. For example, the majority of patients diagnosed with delayed sleep phase syndrome rated themselves as "definitely an evening type," usually an indication of delayed sleep phase syndrome, Ayalon's team reports.
Conversely, patients diagnosed with an irregular sleep-wake pattern tended to classify themselves as "neither evening nor morning type," which "is most compatible with the irregular sleep-wake pattern, which lacks a clear circadian rhythm of sleep-wake cycle."

A Million Dollar Lesson by: Petey Parker, Heart At Work
A cab driver taught me a million dollar lesson in customer satisfaction and expectation. Motivational speakers charge thousands of dollars to impart his kind of training to corporate executives and staff. It cost me a $12 taxi ride.
I had flown into Dallas for the sole purpose of calling on a client. Time was of the essence and my plan included a quick turnaround trip from and back to the airport. A spotless cab pulled up. The driver rushed to open the passenger door for me and made sure I was comfortably seated before he closed the door. As he got in the driver's seat, he mentioned that the neatly folded Wall Street Journal next to me was for my use. He then showed me several tapes and asked me what type of music I would enjoy. Well! I looked around for a "Candid Camera!" Wouldn't you? I could not believe the service I was receiving! I took the opportunity to say, "Obviously you take great pride in your work. You must have a story to tell."
"You bet," he replied, "I used to be in Corporate America. But I got tired of thinking my best would never be good enough. I decided to find my niche in life where I could feel proud of being the best I could be. I knew I would never be a rocket scientist, but I love driving cars, being of service and feeling like I have done a full day's work and done it well. I evaluate my personal assets and... wham! I became a cab driver. One thing I know for sure, to be good in my business I could simply just meet the expectations of my passengers. But, to be GREAT in my business, I have to EXCEED the customer's expectations! I like both the sound and the return of being 'great' better than just getting by on 'average'"
Did I tip him big time? You bet! Corporate America's loss is the traveling folk's friend!

      Cervical Traction Posture Pump 1000

How does the Cervical Traction Posture Pump 1000 WORK ?

The Cervical Traction Posture Pump 1000carefully lifts and separates the neck and back joints in a unique way. Traction, hanging devices, massage units, vibrators, special pillows and regular exercise cannot. Special expanding air cells angled into the spine activate the "bellows or sponge-like" function of the discs, producing a warm, relaxed feeling through the neck and back. Patented up and down motion reinforces the spine's natural "c" curve shape and promotes joint lubrication, joint nutrition, flexibility and the correct posture.

Who Does the Cervical Traction Posture Pump benefit ?
Anyone who works on the computer for long periods. These people carry a forward Head Carriage which puts a lot of pressure on the cervical spine. It is the the most common cause of neck and upper back fatigue and tension. It is for anyone who drives a great deal and has to deal with the stress of driving for long periods. Also for anyone who is constantly in a Forward-Flexed Position. These foward flexed head postions force the natural curve out of the neck and promote poor posture. Side-Flexed Neck Positions also can cause stiffness and spasm. Especially when you fall asleep on the couch. Finally for any person who spends a lot of time on the telephone.

"I first used the posture pump at a chiropractic office. I onlylused it 2 times per week and noticed an improvement in my posture. My head was more in line with my body instead of being forward. As a physical therapist, I think this pump is a good way to restore the normal curve we should have in our necks. I have used it with one patient at my office so far who had significant decrease in pain"
