Study Shows that Sleep can Help Weight Loss …

Sleep Linked to Weight Loss

A recent study shows that there may be a link between losing weight and sleeping. This study included two groups of overweight individuals who sleep in a sleep lab for two separate periods of two weeks. Their diet was kept the same, but the amount of hours they slept for these periods was changed. For one period, the subjects slept for 8 ½ hours and in another period they slept for 5 ½ hours.

What they found was that subjects lost around the same weight, but during the 5 ½ hour period they lost more muscle compared to fat.

The study was by the Annals of Internal Medicine. Kristina Sargent, D.C. from ChicagoHealers.com provides tips for sleeping and health.

What kind of back brace will work for my body type?

I need a back brace for my back pain. I have lower back pain (mostly due to the weight I have to carry on my chest ) but I have a little bit of a belly too. I have gotten a back brace before but it was all elastic and folded itself in half due to my odd shape.

It can be hard to choose the right back belt when you are having excruciating lower back pain. We frequently get questions about how to choose the right lumbar back support.

I would recommend a lumbar back brace called the "Lumbosacral Low back Support Belt " The great thing about his lumbar brace is that it comes in various sizes. When you measure your waist, don't suck your stomach in. You want a true representation of what your size is. Also when you have your measurement around your belly button and you are in between sizes, go for the larger belt. Sizes for this lumbosacral belt go between Small to 3x Large. Check out arc4life.com for more information.

You can also watch a video that shows you how to wear the lumbosacral back belt properly.

Sometimes a Stiff back Belt with a hard backing can be uncomfortable, so i do not recommend it. You want something that is going to make you feel supported and that you can wear under your clothing. You also do not want something that is going to ride up either. This particular lumbar brace creates an upward and inward pressure which supports the whole abdominal region and lower back region. It works great in different positions of movement as well.

These belts are meant to be worn short term, not long term. Yes they can weaken the lumbar muscles but only if worn for long periods of time. For short term, acute pain- the lumbar belt works great. Also, if you know you are going to be working using your lower back, put your belt on for added protection. It is important to work on keeping a strong back.

Simple Tips to Help you Stay Flu-Free this Season

With winter just around the corner, many people are getting ready for another cold and flu season. With the accessibility of the flu vaccine, many people forget the basic steps you can take to ensure that you’re less likely to catch something.

First thing to remember may seem like a simple one, but it is often forgotten. Washing your hands frequently and thoroughly is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick. If you’ve touched something with cold or flu germs, then you touch your mouth, eyes, or nose, now you’ve gotten sick. Wash your hands often during this season, and if you don’t have access to soap and water, you can always carry hand sanitizer with you.

Another tip is to avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes. If you can keep your hands away from your face during the day, you are greatly reducing your chance of getting sick from the germs you may have on your hands.

It’s important also to keep your distance from others who you know are sick. This goes the same if you are sick- keep your distance from coworkers and others you see everyday. Try to get lots of bed rest and drink plenty of fluids to help your body heal faster.

Also, if you are sick, remember to always cover your nose and mouth if you cough or sneeze. Someone else can get sick by breathing your germs in, but by covering your mouth with a tissue, your hands, even your sleeve, you can prevent those around you from getting sick too.

Finally, use a hypoallergenic neck pillow.  This not only will hold less germs and dust mites than your old pillow but keeping the body in good alignment helps to keep it healthy.

Why do I have Numbness and Tingling down my Arm but no Pain?

Numbness & Tingling In The Arms
This is fairly common. It all depends on which nerve fibers are affected. In fact, the majority of the nerves in our body don’t even detect pain. This is why something can be happening but you don’t even know it. This is a subject for another blog however.

If you have numbness, tingling, burning, or another sensation, we know there is nerve irritation somewhere. Typically what happens is that inflammation in the region puts pressure on a nerve causing the symptoms. Usually a spinal shift, muscle strain, or injury creates this problem. All of your neck bones or vertebrae are attached to muscles and ligaments so a muscle strain or muscle spasm will create a spinal misalignment. The irritation to the muscle creates inflammation and the vertebral misalignment adds to the pressure. Aligning the spine often helps the inflammation dissipate. This will also help relax the muscles allowing the spinal column to stay in its normal position.

This is also why it takes some time to heal. It sometimes takes some time to correct alignment and relieve the pressure allowing the body to again work at 100% without tingling and numbness or pain for that matter. Both ice and heat can also be used to speed muscle recovery and relaxation.

How to Relieve Neck Pain After Cracking Your Own Neck

"I hurt my neck Thursday morning by cracking it. It's a bad habit of mine and I did it without thinking about it. It kills to turn my head to the right or to look up. Is there anyway I can help my neck get back to the way it was before? To make it heal faster or to make the pain subside?"- Devon

First of all, cracking your own neck is not a good idea- you can seriously injure yourself. I have a few suggestions for you:
  1. Get a good supportive cervical neck pillow for sleeping. Try Arc4life's linear gravityneck pillow- it comes in 3 sizes: small, medium or large. You get two soft neck rolls to choose from:
  2. Do neck exercises at home- neck stretches
  3. Use a cold ice pack. It will help to decrease inflammation and also provide a pain relieving effect. Ice used with biofreeze natural pain relief gel works well together:
  4. stretch your neck- you can use a simple neck traction device
  5. If you are having muscle tightness or spasms, try a tens unit for pain relief."TENS" stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. This "TENS unit" is a pocket size, portable, battery-operated device that sends electrical impulses to certain parts of the body to block pain signals. The electrical currents produced are mild, but can prevent pain messages from being transmitted to the brain and may raise the level of endorphins (natural pain killers produced by the brain).
  6. see a chiropractor if you are having neck pain. Leave spinal adjustments to the profesionals. Here are some chiropractors Arc4life Recommends:

Horrible Pain In The Upper Neck...Help!

I've had this horrible pain in my upper neck on my left side whenever I turn my head to the right. What can i do to fix the pain? It's almost unbearable...

Try massaging the occipital muscles. These muscles attach from the skull to the 1st 2 vertebrae. They are easy to find. Run your fingers down the back of your skull until you feel the base of the skull (the hard bone feeling changes because you then hit muscle). You can take your fingers and massage or press up towards the skull. Pressing on one tight area for about 7-10 seconds then moving slightly to the side works well. It only takes a little while and you can get significant relief. You can also massage with your fingers in a circular fashion.

This pain in the upper cervicals can also create a headache too; usually one that travels up the back of the head. When you turn to the right it hurts on the left because you are stretching the muscles when you do that. It may be your left occipital muscles that need the most work. There are alot of other muscles in this region as well but the circular massage and trigger point pressure will help them as well.

I Think the Colder Weather Caused my Neck to Hurt??

There is no question the "cold weather" can be tougher on the body. Maybe that’s why so many people move to Florida. Just kidding, there are many reasons people move to Florida or somewhere similar.

The bottom line here is that any deterioration or arthritis may act up with a change in weather. The cold weather also tends to mean we tighten up more; tighter muscles, rolled-shoulder posture... Think about when you’re cold, you kind of curl-up, that head, neck and shoulders roll forward and most likely you end up starting to wear a jacket or heavier clothes that your body has to get used to again.

What usually happens is the combination of the cold and your body not being ready; you turn quick and your neck isn’t warmed up, for example. Sometimes, you do something to strain the neck, but don’t realize it until the next morning. This makes it sometimes difficult to figure out how it got started. Use some neck exercises and stretches to keep your neck muscles relaxed. Sometimes a hot shower may help warm up the muscles as well. Also, nothing works better to strengthen the spine and ward of degeneration than keeping the neck in it strongest healthiest position - Its ideal alignment!

"Poor Neck Alignment Leads to a Weaker Neck"

Neck posture is extremely important. Our bodies are made so that we can move, twist, etc … and also so we stay as strong as possible. We are always fighting the pressure of gravity!
We Can't Escape Gravity, Keep Your Spine Aligned!

Not only does adequate spine alignment mean limited nerve pressure which will help us to stay healthy and pain free, but it also helps us withstand the downward pressure gravity puts on us.

By investing some time in strengthening neck exercises and proper neck alignment, not only will you reduce pain now, you will be investing in a strong neck for the future to help prevent more serious problems down the road...

Properly withstanding these pressures prevents spinal breakdown and future nerve pressure also. Let’s look at the neck or cervical spine. Remember when I told you for every inch of forward head it increases the weight gravity puts on you by 10 pounds. This is a perfect example- whose neck do you think will break down faster, one with forward head posture and an extra 10 pounds on it everyday, or someone with perfect posture? I think you know the answer.

So, you can see how you don’t need to be a power lifter to want to strengthen the neck. Ultimately, correcting your neck’s alignment will strengthen your neck and prevent neck degeneration.

Using a Hot and Cold Pack to get Maximum Relief

At Arc4life.com one of the products we specialize in is hot and cold packs. Whether you have acute pain or chronic pain, having a versatile hot and cold pack at home is a necessary for healing.

One simple idea is use a bag of frozen peas or carrots right out of the freezer. We have all done that in the past. You have been playing basketball outside with your friends, and you fall on the hard pavement bruising your knee. You run inside, clean the area, and see that it is swelled. Right away, you are probably thinking ice this knee down for maximum pain relief. Using frozen vegetables maybe the first thing that comes to mind. But frozen vegetables may not retain the cold for a long period of time, they may start to melt all over the knee, into your socks and then you could have a faint odor of carrots on you, then may not go away quickly. Also, you cannot use that frozen vegetable for food now. Well technically you can, but freezing and refreezing can ruin the taste of a product.

A better idea is to use a gel filled hot and cold pack. Why? Because first of all you can use your therapy pack for hot or for cold. Simply putting the therapy pack in the microwave for 1-2 minutes can provide wonderful heat therapy. Second, gel filled hot and cold packs retain their temperature longer. A cold pack will stay colder longer and a hot pack will stay hotter longer. Third, you can use and reuse as many times as you need. These therapy packs last a long time. Fourth, the cover on the hot and cold pack is gentle against the skin. It is always advised that you wrap the therapy pack in a towel before using, but you don’t have to with basic hot and cold packs. Finally, you can get a therapy pack in many different sizes, suited for many different body parts. So if for example you know that you are getting knee surgery and the Dr has advised you to use a hot pack on your knee you can get a gel therapy pack that will fit your knee area perfectly. You can even buy therapy packs that have a strap on them. The elastic strap attaches to the pack to hold it in place. Great for arms, knees, elbows, necks and shoulders. These are called Dual Comfort Hot and Cold packs.

These Dual Comfort Hot and Cold Packs comes in 5 sizes (see below for sizes available). These hot and cold packs have an elastic strap that attaches to the pack to hold the therapy pack in place. Also, there are two surfaces to the therapy packs. The light blue is a rapid-release surface (quicker results for acute injuries), and the dark blue is the slow release surface (sub-acute injuries). These hot and cold packs can be heated in the microwave or in a hot towel cabinet.

Deep Sleep is an Important part of Healing of the Body

For those people who suffer from neck pain, getting into a comfortable position can be difficult. In the last blog post, we discussed ways to get a restful sleep when you are suffering from neck pain. For some people, lying down, actually increases the pain.

Why is getting good deep sleep at night so important?

A Harvard based report states 75% of us get less than 6 sleep hours at least a few nights per week, which over the short haul, is not a problem, but NOT so in the long haul! They go on to list “Six reasons not to scrimp on sleep:”
  1. Learning and memory – “memory consolidation” occurs better after we sleep when learning new tasks (and tests scores reflect the difference);
  2. Weight and metabolism – chronic sleep problems can cause weight gain by altering the way our body processes and stores carbohydrates and by altering the hormones that affect appetite;
  3. Safety – increased fatigue = a greater tendency to fall asleep during the day, which can be catastrophic (car accidents, industrial accidents, etc.);
  4. Mood – the lack of sleep can increase irritability, impatience, concentration loss and moodiness;
  5. Cardiovascular health – serious sleep loss has been linked to hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, and irregular heartbeat; Heart health is a very important part of sound deep sleep.
  6. Disease – alters immune function and may help fight cancer.

The Many Benefits of the Cervical Traction Neck Pillow

The Cervical Linear Traction Neck Pillow Also Comes in Large
at the Neck Pain Relief Shop: www.neckpainreliefkit.com
Arc4life’s cervical linear traction neck pillow has gained a lot of popularity in the last few years- it is a pillow that has many benefits and has helped people with many neck pain conditions and symptoms.

To start, the traction pillow is two pillows in one. First, you have the “V” pillow side. This side has a neck roll for support and correcting the neck lordosis plus it has the “V” side for gentle traction.

Some people feel uncomfortable with the pull of a neck traction machine or a home traction unit. In those cases, the cervical traction pillow is perfect because it’s a very gentle stretch, so much so that you barely notice it. It’s made this way so it’s very comfortable, which is another positive. Also, it helps you get a good night’s sleep. Putting the neck in alignment and restoring the cervical curve is vital to the body’s function. Neck alignment is a must because it keeps the cervical nerves free from pressure, which will prevent not only neck pain, but keep other conditions away too.

The pillow is also hypoallergenic, which is important for allergy sufferers, not to mention, keeping and restoring the neck curve and allowing nerves to function best will keep the sinuses open and working well. Arc4life also carries a special dust cover made especially for the traction pillow that will protect the pillow from dust, mites, mold and other allergens.

The other side, if you rotate the pillow 180 degrees so the “V” section is above your head, this is the support pillow side. This side only has the neck roll, and some people, even people looking to use the traction, may want to start with this side if they are not used to using any type of neck pillow.

The arc4life cervical linear traction neck pillow also comes in a large king size pillow- this pillow is available on Arc4life's Sister Site: The Neck Pain Relief Shop > Neck Pillows > Traction Pillows. This is a special order item and can take a few days longer to ship. The dimensions of the large traction pillow are 21"x33".

The Seriousness of Allergy Season

With over 35 million Americans suffering from seasonal allergies, it’s a much more prevalent and important problem than most people think it is. With severity of symptoms varying from person to person, ragweed season could mean sneezing a few more times than normal, or losing out on sleep and work because of intense allergy symptoms.
Allergy Relief Pillow

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) studies, each year Americans cumulatively miss 3.8 million days of work or school due to seasonal allergies. Over 16 million visits to physician’s offices each year are because of allergy symptoms. Aside from expenses, suffering due to allergies can cause sleeping problems, leading to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and poorer performance at work or school. So with the allergy season upon us, it’s best to get to the doctor to make sure you take the steps needed to make your allergy suffering minimal this year.

Two things I recommend are 1) Use a hypoallergenic pillow with a special cover and 2) See your chiropractor.

Allergy Season is in  Full Swing in Glastonbury CT

Researchers predict than 50 percent of the population in the U.S. suffer from some type of allergy. Sneezing, itchy noses, coughing and wheezing- the all to familiar annoying symptoms.

With over 35 million Americans suffering from seasonal allergies, it’s a much more prevalent and important problem than most people think it is. allergists say the Fall is when the ragweed is in bloom - and that's when things go from bad to worse. With severity of symptoms varying from person to person, ragweed season could mean sneezing a few more times than normal, or losing out on sleep and work because of intense allergy symptoms.

What are some natural steps you can take to relieve the symptoms of allergies ?

  • Keep your home as clean as possible by keeping your windows shut and removing your shoes before coming into the house. Dust regularly and use organic products for cleaning.
  • Flush out your nasal passages with a saline water solution. You can use a product such as a neti pot. This provides natural allergy relief by flushing out pollen and thinning out the mucus to help clear nasal passages.
  • Take probiotics that treat allergies naturally
  • Drink lots of water to help you breathe easier. This natural allergy remedy involves drinking lots of liquids to help flush out mucus.
  • Work outside in the garden when pollen counts are low. Save exercise or yard work for the afternoon, since pollen counts are highest from 5 am to 10 am. If you must do yard work, use a pollen-filtering mask.
  • Monitor air quality and check pollen count reports. Rainy, cloudy, and windless days usually have lower pollen counts. The best time to go outside is after a good rainfall — it helps to clear pollen from the air.
  • Wash bedding in hot water (130°F) on a weekly basis. This will help kill dust mites and relieve allergies.
  • Use special dust covers for pillows that have a zipper. These allergen-impermeable covers help minimize the penetration of allergens, which also helps relieve allergies.
  • Keep humidity levels low. To remedy your allergies naturally, keep the air conditioning set at a lower temperature and reduce moisture around the home. Dehumidifiers will also help to decrease mold and dust mites.

Forward Head Carriage can Increase the Weight of the Head on the Spine …

Foward Head Posture

Forward head posture can actually increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 pounds (Kapundji, Physiology of Joints; Vol. 3).

Basically, our spines are built with these curves in place to withstand the forces of gravity. It’s just like a set of building blocks; if you stack them up so they’re out of alignment, then they can’t balance either. In our spine it’s similar; instead of collapsing however, the body compensates for misalignments and pulls calcium out of the bone and makes spurs or fuses things up to stabilize. Unfortunately, this is a last resort protection mechanism and will, of course, contribute to nerve pressure and therefore pain.

Using neck traction and even the cervical traction neck pillow by arc4life.com can help restore neck alignment and reduce neck stress due to extra weight of the head. Also, don’t forget, bone is heavy, so you can imagine having all the weight of not only the skull but all the contents pressing down!

Neck Pain: The Results Are In!

The majority of neck pain sufferers can still do their daily activities. Research shows that a little over 10% have neck pain that limits their activities. Lastly, a very small percentage have pain that qualifies as a disability.

Some notes to keep in mind are the fact that if the neck pain often recurs, chances are it will eventually be worse and worse. So, if your pain is not enough to stop you from working now, there’s a chance that your next episode may be different. Also, it’s just not worth it to lose time from work, or your family, or leisure activities. Keeping the pain away is much more cost effective and so much easier. Dealing with pain, whether it’s restricting activities, disabling, or neither, is still literally a pain!

Treatment options vary, and it also depends on the condition and the severity of the condition. But one thing is for certain: It’s always better to keep the neck pain away rather than waiting for it to occur and then dealing with it.

One great option whether neck pain is present or not is using a contour pillow or neck pillow. By far the most popular pillow is our cervical linear traction neck pillow.

Posture, Exercise, and Rehab Products are Vital to Feeling Better and Getting Pain Relief

Let’s say an injury occurs, however it happens- a fall, fender bender, or just sleeping funny- and you go to a chiropractor, physical therapist, or some other type of health care provider. They may manipulate the spine, show you exercises or stretches, relieve muscle tension with massage or specific muscle techniques. And this may be all you need … But most times it’s not!

Surveys have shown us that the majority of D.C.’s out there recommend therapeutic products to the majority of their patients. These kind of products; like back supports, neck pillows, ice and hot packs, exercise equipment, tens units, and massage products are very effective in adding to a patient’s treatment and getting them better quicker.

You can Use A Tens Unit at Home
For Muscle Tightness and Pain Relief
These rehab products also can stay with you at home for years to come. So let’s say that a “neck ache” returns- may be time to pull out the list of neck exercises or break out the neck traction unit that you’ve neglected since getting better. Your neck pillow should always be used; because don’t forget, maintaining your spine and posture will keep pain away.

Your posture correcting, exercising, and other rehabilitation products are great tools to speed recovery from things like neck or back pain, but also great to improve health and keep pain away.

Vibration Massage: Relaxes the Muscles but Stimulates the Nervous System too!

Stimulating the nervous system is extremely important in balancing the body and restoring function. It’s the imbalances in the body that lead to pain or some other symptom.

The reason muscles get tight or bind up into knots is imbalance. If there is pressure on the nerves and the muscles controlled by those nerves are not getting 100% of the messages they’re supposed to, things don’t work right. One muscle stays constantly tensed and shortened while the others are loose and move like they should. The constant tightness leads to inflammation and waste products building up, then there is more and more nerve pressure.

We have founds that a great type of massage is with a tool called the Jeanie Rub Massager. Not only does it massage tight muscles, but the vibratory massage stimulates the nerves. Doing this helps balance the nervous system. Research has shown that many health conditions are caused by one part of the brain or nervous system that is under-firing or over-firing. Restoring balance and correcting this can significantly improve symptoms such as neck pain. Other common similar conditions are headaches, numbness and tingling in the arms and hands, or carpal tunnel-like symptoms.

Relief From Neck Soreness!

I recently strained my neck. I went to a chiropractor for the 1st. I also just started using my new neck pillow.  My chiropractor said I may have soreness because it was my first treatment plus I strained my neck "pretty good".  I know too that using a different pillow than I'm used too can cause some soreness also.  The actual pain is much better but I have a soreness or ache going on, how can I speed the recovery?

Neck Soreness
First of all, congratulations on doing all the right things.  Using a chiropractor along with getting one of our neck pillows is a great combination to get rid of your neck pain as quick as possible.  The next thing to do to speed the recovery and limit the soreness is to use ice.  For neck soreness try the tri-sectional cold pack which you can rest on your shoulders while sitting up.

This should diminish the soreness.  The other factor is time, and based on how badly you strained your neck may determine how long it takes to heal.  The fact that your already free from major neck pain is a good sign.  Make sure to use the pillow gradually, this will help you get accustomed to it; but with most it doesn't take long at all.

Something else I often recommend for muscle strains is biofreeze gel.  It is an all natural pain relief gel that works really well and that I prefer over taking meds.
